Super Mario World: Hear The SNES Classic's Restored Soundtrack

Thanks in part to the Nintendo Gigaleak, the soundtrack for Super Mario World has been restored and gives fans of the classic game a chance to hear some of the most iconic songs before they were compressed for an SNES cartridge. These tracks, which you can listen to here, were restored by a group of people and shared by @LeBrickster on Twitter and YouTube. This was made possible because the Nintendo Gigaleak included the source code for Super Mario Advance from the Game Boy Advance, which just so happened to reuse samples from Super Mario World. The samples discovered had the names for the instruments used in Super Mario World, and this helped in restoring the original tracks. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/01/30/top-10-console-launch-games-ever"] @LeBrickster also addressed complaints that the restored tracks "do not sound good" and that many "prefer the originals." They mention that these "tracks were likely not designed with th

Mass Effect: Andromeda's New Aliens Were Cut Due to Budget, Scope, and Cosplay

Mass Effect: Andromeda could have had up to ten new alien species, but they were cut due to budget, scope, and... cosplay considerations. One of the biggest criticisms of Mass Effect: Andromeda was the lack of new alien species, especially when the Mass Effect Trilogy introduced us to the Krogan, Asari, Drell, Batarians, Salarians, Turians, Quarian, Prothean, Hanar, Elcor, Keepers, Volus, Collectors, Geth, Reapers, Vorcha, and more. In our Mass Effect: Andromeda review , we said "What’s bizarre is that BioWare went to the trouble of shipping us 2.5 million light years away to introduce only two new alien races (plus some robots) over more than 50 hours of campaign and major side missions, and only one local joins your crew." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/03/20/mass-effect-andromeda-review"] Apparently this wasn't the original plan, and many of the developers on Andromeda recently spoke to TheGamer to discuss why these new alien species never ma

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Is Required to Get the New Mario Pin Set

The missions for the second set of pins celebrating Mario's 35th anniversary have been available for some time, but your chance to obtain the pins based on such games as Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Odyssey may be over unless you have completed expired missions and purchase Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Nintendo recently updated the list of missions for Mario's celebration , adding a handful of new tasks to complete to be eligible for the second pin set. However, many of the previous missions have since expired and can no longer be completed. You'll need to complete 14 missions plus purchase the upcoming Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury for a total of 15 out of the 22 missions before receiving a code for the Wave 2 pins. WB's Nemesis System Patent Was Approved This Week After Multiple Attempts

Image
Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment, publishers of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its 2017 sequel, Shadow of War (both developed by Monolith Entertainment), have finally managed to secure a patent for the franchise’s signature Nemesis System. The US Patent and Trademark Office released an issue notice on February 3, 2021, stating that the patent would go into effect on February 23 of this year. Warner Bros. has the option to maintain the patent through 2035, providing they keep up with the necessary fees. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/10/09/middle-earth-shadow-of-war-fighting-in-the-arena-in-4k"] The patent, filed as “Nemesis characters, nemesis forts, social vendettas and followers in computer games,” effectively codifies the functions of Monolith’s Nemesis system and the sum of its parts as the property of WB. While the language in the application is fairly obtuse - as most patent claims tend to be - the “short” version is that the patent covers

Subnautica: Below Zero Looks to Be More of What We Love

Subnautica was one of my favorite open world survival games of the last decade , and on the surface of its frigid ocean, Below Zero could almost be mistaken for a huge expansion. As I dive deeper, though, what I've found is a full-fledged sequel that doesn't fix what wasn't broken about the first game while improving in little but meaningful ways in a lot of areas. I haven't fully plumbed the depths of the current Early Access version, which now includes the entirety of the fully-voiced main story. But what I have seen makes me eager to go deeper. Right as I take my first plunge, it's immediately noticeable how much better the tech is this time around. One of my only major frustrations with the original Subnautica was how mood-ruining it could be to see textures and objects pop in as I was zipping around the otherwise beautifully immersive underwater environments in my submersible. Those jarring eyesores are completely gone, allowing me to explore eerie reefs and fo

Apple's VR Headset Could Have 8K Displays, Cost $3000

Update: Since the original report that Apple is planning to release an incredibly expensive and limited VR headset, more information has come to light about the proposed virtual reality hardware from Apple. In a new report from The Information, the outlet confirms earlier details about Apple's VR headset including the use of fabric mesh as a material to lighten the overall weight of the headset. The report also agrees that the VR headset will be incredibly expensive with a price tag that could hit as high as $3,000. The headset will be capable of both VR and mixed reality content and will have over a dozen cameras for tracking hand movement. A LIDAR sensor, which was included in the most recent iPhone 12 and 12 Pro models, will also be included as well as dual 8K displays. 8K displays for a VR headset will put Apple's device ahead of the competition in terms of resolution, and the company will reportedly use a new Apple-developed chip said to be more powerful than the M1 chip

Rust Adds Softcore Mode to Help 'More Casual Players'

Image
Facepunch Studios has added a new Softcore mode to Rust aimed at a more casual player base. "A major part of Rust has always been its hardcore, ruthless PvP and will continue to be," Facepunch Studio's  blog post  about the new game mode reads. "But we're aware that some players want a less brutal experience. Introducing Softcore mode — a new game mode in Rust, aimed at more casual players. Don't worry, the majority of our servers will still be regular vanilla Rust (hardcore)." When players are killed in this new mode, half of their inventory can be reclaimed by them at either the spot of their death or at a reclaim terminal, which can be found in Bandit Town and at the Outpost. Players can now spawn at those two locations at any time, provided they're not flagged as hostile, and now they can only view the contents of a wounded player. The maximum team size has been changed to four, as well, in order to stop large groups of players terrorising indivi

Steam Gets Official Launch in China – Could Long-time ‘Gray Area’ Users Lose Their Games?

Three years after Valve’s initial announcement of a partnership with Chinese MMO developer and publisher Perfect World to officially launch Steam in China, Valve is finally preparing to launch its client in beta at last next month. But after years of Steam’s unofficial existence in a legal gray area in the country for millions of users, there’s a chance its global client -- and all the unlicensed games users have bought and played on it to date -- might not survive the transition. According to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad on Twitter , the two companies have announced a public beta for February 9, which will include just two games: the Valve-published DOTA 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Chinese players can sign up for Steam China either with new accounts or using existing Steam Global accounts, though if they use existing accounts they will not be able to play any other games in their regular Steam libraries through the Steam China client for the time being. And per Ahm

Sony Patent Could Hint at Upgraded DualSense Controller Plans

A Sony patent may have hinted at a potential future revision to the DualSense controller. As reported by Respawn First,  a patent found on the United States Patent and Trademark Office website suggests that Sony may be working to implement a Wi-Fi transceiver in future peripherals. The technology will allow controllers to make inputs via a Wi-Fi transceiver as well as the regular Bluetooth transceiver which is present in both the Dualshock 4 and the DualSense. Whichever of the two input signals reaches the PlayStation first will be used. Having two potential commands at once will apparently work to reduce latency, according to the pattern's description. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/06/playstation-5-review"] The patent image depicts a DualShock 4 controller with a Wi-Fi node in the touchpad area. It was filed nearly two years ago in July of 2019, but given its recent publication, it means that Sony may be considering implementing the technology in fut

Paradise Lost Is a Wild Adventure Game About a World Where the Nazis Nuked Europe

It’s immediately apparent why developer PolyAmorous named its upcoming post-apocalyptic adventure narrative Paradise Lost. This is not only a game about a world in which Nazis remained in power into the 1960s before eventually nuking the vast majority of Europe, it’s a game about the last story on Earth. In Paradise Lost you take on the role of Szymon, a 12-year old boy that’s discovered an enormous underground Nazi bunker beneath Poland. While shielded from the ravaged and radiated barren nuclear wasteland, it’s far from an idyllic safe haven. I was recently shown an in-progress build of the game that took place a little over an hour into the story. While the entire game is only planned to be around four hours for a single playthrough, it’s designed to include branching story moments, divergent paths through the environment, and multiple endings. Activision Confirms There's Another Call of Duty Coming This Year

Activision has confirmed that there's a new Call of Duty game coming late this year. The news was revealed during Activision Blizzard's Q4 2020 earnings call (transcribed by The Motley Fool ), in which Activision CFO Dennis Durkin talked through the company's plans for Call of Duty – which includes a "strong premium release planned for Q4 in 2021." Given that Durkin also mentions migrating the existing CoD community to that game, there seems no doubt that this is another full annual release for the series. With the success of free-to-play mode Call of Duty: Warzone across multiple years, some have questioned the need for annual Call of Duty releases, but it seems Activision has no intention of slowing down. No title, subject matter, or developer are mentioned in the calls. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/23/call-of-duty-warzone-review"] Warzone will seemingly remain a part of the ongoing plan, with Durkin saying that the franchise, &quo

Capcom's Huge Leak Has Had 'No Significant Impact' on the Games It Plans to Release

Capcom has said that recent leaks tied to a cyber attack have had "no significant impact" on title releases and that development work has "largely returned to normal." The news was revealed as part of Capcom's Fiscal Year 2020 3rd Quarter earnings presentation . In the Question and Answer summary, the studio responded to a question about the impact of the data security incident the company suffered back in November of 2020 , which leaked a number of games and their release windows, including Dragons Dogma 2 and Street Fighter 6. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/01/21/resident-evil-village-story-trailer"] "There has been no significant impact at this point, and development work has largely returned to normal," the answer reads. This suggests that the leak has not had any impact on Capcom's current game development plans and that the studio is proceeding as normal. Capcom issued a statement in January noting that 16.415 peopl

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition Changes Some Gratuitious Camera Shots

BioWare has altered some camera shots from the Mass Effect series for the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition remaster package. In an interview with Metro , Mass Effect: Legendary Edition's Project Director Mac Walters said that the team changed certain camera angles that were deemed gratuitous. "Kevin [Meek] actually called out some camera cuts that were just.... why was that focusing on Miranda's butt?," Walters explained. So in some cases, we said, 'Okay, we can make a change there'." Elsewhere in the interview, Character and Environment Director Kevin Meek alludes to another low camera shot where a male Shepherd is sat with his legs open. The developers were unable to change the animation itself, but they could alter the position of the camera to change how the shot is framed. "If you were wearing a skirt, it would be a bit unflattering," Meek explains. "So we can’t necessarily change that animation, but you can raise that camera up slightly

First Look: Concept Art for Monster Hunter Rise's Somnacanth and Aknosom Weapons and Armor

[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=monster-hunter-rise-concept-art-somnacanth-and-aknosom-armor-weapons&captions=true"] There is an obvious Japan-inspired setting for home base Kamura Village and the mission maps, while many of the new monsters are inspired by Yokai, or ghosts and spirits from Japanese folklore. However, Ichinose tells us that the game’s equipment design has also been inspired by a wide range of cultures outside of Japan too. Take for example the Aknosom armor and helmet, whose designs were obviously derived from Western knights. However,
