New Shin Megami Tensei V Gameplay Features an Angry Ogre Boss - Tokyo Game Show 2021

In a special broadcast aired at Tokyo Game Show 2021 Online, Sega and Atlus showed new gameplay footage of Shin Megami Tensei V, due for a Japanese release on November 11, 2021. This demo differed from the one on the show floor and published yesterday by IGN , and featured an extended battle against a red ogre. The player (a Japanese game writer named Mafia Kajita, a self-identified fan of the series) explored a sandy ruined area of Tokyo, leading him to compare the sights to the famous sand dunes of Tottori. Monsters freely roam the map and are not only visible but audible to the player; masked Ippon-Datara wailed from underneath their masks, making a horrible sound. Kajita engaged in several small fights, showing off a variety of attacks on weaker monsters, including a Mermaid's scream which can freeze enemies and shatter them if they run out of HP. Shin Megami Tensei V battles aren't all about fighting though, as the player can choose at any time to try and talk to the

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin's Devs Discuss Changes Made Based on Player Feedback - Tokyo Game Show 2021

The development team behind Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin have been taking player feedback to heart as they work to improve the game ahead of its release next year – in ways even they didn’t expect. After hearing all the speculation from fans about the identity of Chaos following the initial demo that was released in the summer, the developers — a collaboration of minds from Square Enix and Team Ninja — went ahead and included his name (Jack Garland, i.e. the name of the main character) in the new trailer that was shown during Tokyo Game Show 2021. “The protagonist is Garland, and I’d had in mind for a while that one day, I’d like to tell the story of how Garland turns into Chaos,” producer Tetsuya Nomura said during a special presentation for the game on Saturday night. Nomura participated as a voiceover, while other members of the team and two guest players appeared in person. “But for some reason, the trailer spoiled the twist, I guess.” Jin Fujiwara, one of the p

Get your bubbling cauldrons ready for winter as Koei Tecmo will release Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream in North America on February 25, 2022 for PlayStation 4, Steam, and Nintendo Switch. This new entry in the Atelier series (which celebrates its 25th anniversary next year) is a sequel to Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book , first released in Japan in 2015 but more recently ported to the Nintendo Switch . You can check out an exclusive look at the introduction to the game below: In her first adventure, young alchemist Sophie Neuenmuller ran her own business in the town of Kirchen Bell but struggled with her craft. She discovered a floating, talking book of alchemic recipes named Plactha. This book shared her extensive knowledge with Sophie in exchange for help in regaining her memories and original form. Sophie also partnered with non-book friends as she gathered materials for her alchemy and they collectively fought monsters in the wil

Konami is Inviting Indie Developers to Make New Games Based on Some of Its Classic Series

Konami has announced an indie game contest that actively asks small developers to make games based on some of its classic series, including Gradius, Ganbare Goemon, and many more. Konami's Action & Shooting Game Contest asks indie creators to plan and develop new action games and shooters based on past Konami titles. The rules allow for creators to make remakes or sequels, they can pick out a single character or mechanic from a past title, or even change or combine genres that may not have been in the originals. Through the collaboration of indie creators and Konami, these new works could potentially become commercial products. CAMP (@camp_creators) September 30, 2021 A video outlining the contest was published by Konami. Astria Ascending Review

There is always something exciting about playing a brand new JRPG that isn’t from one of the popular franchises we already know and love, mostly to see how it differentiates itself from the pack. But while Astria Ascending’s turn-based combat is excellent, its mediocre story and weak quest design drag it down. It has plenty of amusing things going for it, but those shortcomings keep it from becoming the breakout JRPG it had the potential to be. Astria Ascending puts a side-scrolling twist on a more traditional, turn-based RPG shell. You’ll explore its world of Orchanon as a 2D platformer, entering separate rooms, collecting treasures, and encountering enemies as you travel across the screen. But while its presentation is novel, its story setup is something we’ve seen several times before: you play as Ulan, the leader of the 333rd company of Demi-Gods trying to stop an uncompelling chaotic threat that wants to remove harmony from the world. Each of your party members has their own

Paradox Cancels 'Several' Unannounced Games to Focus on Its Proven Genres

Paradox Interactive has stopped development on multiple unannounced games in an effort to put more resources into safer bets for the company's profits. The publisher announced the cancellations in a press release on Thursday . Paradox says they are still working on 15 new games including Victoria 3, Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, Crusader Kings 3 on consoles, and the Shadowrun Trilogy on consoles. Paradox is also working on many new DLCs. Paradox CEO Fredrik Wester says the company is focusing more on the company's reputation for strategy games and making games last long after launch. "Paradox Interactive was born and raised in strategy and management games," Wester said in a press release. "It is where we have our heart and our mind and we are passionate about making games that our players can enjoy over a long period of time. Therefore we have sharpened our pipeline further to ensure that the projects with the highest potential have the resources

New World Review in Progress

Update #1: Amazon’s New World has been out for little over half a week, but its still-overpopulated server queues have shown no sign of waning. After several days of multiple-hour-long queues, I’ve finally managed to scratch together a level 20 sword-and-shield-wielder on the Minda server – Syndicate, if you’re curious – and I’m having a pretty good time overall, despite some laggy moments here and there. In my journey from level one to level 20, I’ve already witnessed everything from a full-blown hostile takeover of my starting zone (First Light, which was apparently grabbed out of the Syndicate’s hands by the troublesome green-tinted Marauders) to the threat of an upcoming invasion by the encroaching Corrupted horde. I haven’t yet been directly participating in these large-scale battles for the fate of Aeternum, which are reserved for level 50 characters and above. Instead I’ve spent most of my time running around the map, filling my inventory with whatever isn’t nailed down, and

Dungeon Encounters: Square Enix’s Newest RPG is a Celebration of Old-School Active Time Battles

Image
Dungeon Encounters is directed by Hiroyuki Ito, involved in the creation of titles including Final Fantasy IV, V, XII, and Tactics. I started sweating a little bit as I began playing because not only is he well known for his work designing battle systems, but I was told that it was first and foremost about its systems, so naturally, I prepared myself to have to take a lot on board. Some of you may also be interested to know that Cattle Call, known for the Metal Max series and The Legend of Legacy, handled its development. Not a game with lush visuals and effects or a deep, engrossing story, but a turn-based, numbers-focused, bare-bones RPG of sorts. IGN Japan had the opportunity to try it out before release, so here are our initial impressions. This dungeon crawler RPG involves forming a party of up to four characters and delving into the depths of a board-game-style square grid map. Though the dungeon is divided into squares, you're able to focus on exploring and fighting you

New Square Enix RPG Dungeon Encounters Revealed, Coming in Two Weeks - Tokyo Game Show 2021

Square Enix has revealed a new "dungeon exploration RPG" called Dungeon Encounters, and announced it will be released in just two weeks on October 14, for PlayStation 4, Steam, and Nintendo Switch. During a special video presentation at Tokyo Game Show 2021 , Square Enix producer Hiroaki Kato and director Hiroyuki Ito revealed a game that does not resemble the JRPG format which Square Enix helped make famous worldwide. Players march along a narrow grid, as if they are exploring a dungeon map rather than the dungeon itself. On-screen counters indicate players' coordinates in the dungeon, as well as how many squares they have uncovered. Exploring a complete floor unlocks the next one and grants the character additional "ability points." We've already gone hands-on with Dungeon Encounters , saying that some will be turned off by the low frills looks, but "if you are the type of player drawn to battling it out in simple yet deep ways, you should defini

The Top 25 N64 Games of All Time

Image
As IGN celebrates its 25th anniversary, we’re updating our previous Top N64 Games list, originally written more than 21 years ago, to celebrate the N64 games that have left the biggest mark not just on our lives, but on the industry as a whole. As always with any kind of list like this, it’s important to establish our criteria to explain as best as we can why some games made the list and others didn’t. First, while we didn't have a hard rule on only including games that were exclusive to the Nintendo 64, we also didn’t want to include games that are just simply better on other platforms of that era, like Resident Evil 2 and Rayman 2. Second, we tried to consider a number of factors, including historical significance, how good it looked and played at the time, in addition to how well it holds up today, y’know, just in case you’re still able to dig your old N64 out of the closet. The games toward the top of this list are the ones that we feel have the best combination of those th
