Weird West Review
In this alternate universe, the West was won by trying a bunch of ideas so crazy they just might work… and if they don’t, hitting the quick-load button to revert to an earlier save and trying something even crazier until you pull it off. Thanks to that freedom to experiment with its world as you explore, Weird West is one of those games that feels like a stealth and combat playground even as it tells five mostly serious, well-written stories with interesting decisions throughout and a thoughtful conclusion. And with so much ground to cover and replayability to investigate, it’s well worth putting up with some quirks and underwhelming loot. What ties Weird West’s plot together is a group of shadowy figures using a magical brand to force your character’s consciousness into the bodies of various unsuspecting people. It’s a clever play on the way so many games have us take control of a character who already exists in that world but still need to bring us up to speed on their identity: h...
Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader – How Did it Take This Long to Get a Warhammer CRPG?
It’s truly bizarre that across the nearly 30 years of Warhammer video games, we haven’t had a single one that attempted to channel the tabletop Warhammer experience by utilizing the genre that feels best suited to do so: CRPGs. But that’s all about to change, as Pathfinder developer Owlcats has been cooking up something to fill this void. During an extensive hands-off demo of Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, I checked out its extremely chunky turn-based combat system, drowned in its plethora of dialogue options and social skill checks, and nodded approvingly at its lovingly faithful depiction of Warhammer’s morbid universe. While it’s still very early, so far this CRPG is shaping up to be everything I’ve wanted from a Warhammer video game. If you’ve ever played (or even glanced at) a game of Warhammer 40K, then you probably know it’s designed for a hyper-specific kind of nerd who loves calculations, large-scale drama, and an incredibly detailed world one could easily get lost in. Warham...

Valorant's Episode 5: Act III Battlepass includes a gun buddy called "Corbin's Light" that honors a fan named Corbin who recently passed away after a battle with cancer. The Valorant team shared the news and Corbin's story in a blog for what's new in Valorant's newest season. The words reveal that the Gun Buddy itself was inspired by design notes from Corbin and his older brother, and it includes the coordinates of a star that was named after Corbin by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In honor of Corbin, Riot Games will additionally be making a donation via its Riot Games Social Impact Fund to the C-Squad Foundation, a charity that was started in Corbin's honor before he passed. If you'd like to add Corbin's Light to your collection, you'll have to earn 23,000 XP in Valorant's latest free Battlepass. It is the equivalent of around 30 tiers on the paid Battlepass. On C-Squad Foundation's Instagram, the people behind the page men...
The Weird and Wonderful Fans Still Playing Fallout 76

The launch of Fallout 76 was a disaster. From unforgivable bugs and data breaches, to collector’s edition items that were the very definition of the words ‘false advertising’, the once lauded series went from controversy to controversy after the launch of its first MMO. Fallout 76, according to most, was dead on arrival. But four years later, much to everyone’s surprise, vault dwellers are still emerging. And not only are they still actively and obsessively playing, but they’re doing some extremely weird things, from black markets, Shakespeare troupes, and full-time courier services, all the way to roleplaying cannibals and trap camp serial killers. I wanted to get to the bottom of why Fallout diehards are not only still playing the once ridiculed game, but why their 76 obsession is taking the MMO further than was ever intended. This is the Inside Story of the weird and wonderful fans still playing Fallout 76. Normally an IGN Inside Story is available as both a video documentary...

As long as Gotham City is still standing, Batman will always be there keeping the forces of darkness at bay. Or will he? Gotham Knights introduces a version of the DC Universe where Batman has apparently been killed, leaving his former sidekicks to carry on his war on crime. As it turns out, this is hardly the first DC story to show us a world without Batman. There have been many comics, shows and movies over the years to explore what happens when Bruce Wayne is either killed in action or simply gives up being Batman. Here are the important ones every Bat-fan should know - and who knows, maybe some elements here will wind up playing into the events of Gotham Knights as well! Earth-2 Batman In the classic DC multiverse, Earth-2 is home to the original Golden Age versions of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, as well as their children. In this world, Batman gets married to Catwoman and ages out of the superhero business, leaving an adult Dick Grayson to carry on the fight. Bruce an...

The Internet Mourns the Dog in Resident Evil 4 Remake

Capcom recently showed off a hefty chunk of gameplay from the upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake , and fans noticed one key, heartbreaking difference. In the original Resident Evil 4, there's an adorable pup stuck in a bear trap that Leon stumbles upon. The player can help free the dog from the trap, and the dog will return to help you out in a boss battle a bit later on. In Resident Evil 4's upcoming remake, it seems that's no longer the case. As you can see in the video below, by the time Leon reaches the trap in RE4's remake, the dog is already dead, leaving you to face the upcoming fight all on your own. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 😭 #ResidentEvil4Remake pic.twitter.com/7W8bKEU3ql — IGN (@IGN) October 20, 2022 RE fans on the internet are mourning the loss of the iconic canine. Even the well-known "Can You Pet the Dog?" Twitter account chimed in, voicing some strongly worded anger over the pup's early demise. What the fuck https://t.co/9HILadjL1h — Can...

Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet are less than a month away, and I was lucky enough to go hands-on with a special demo build, specifically of Pokemon Scarlet. I could explore a large area and tackle three main story tasks in any order, and I opted to get a taste of as many things as I could in the hour I had, including the Let’s Go! feature, picnics, a Starfall Street challenge, a Gym Test and battle, plus, character customization. Here are my hands-on impressions of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, with summaries of everything we know about the games so far. Paldea, the First Open-World Pokemon Region Pokemon Scarlet and Violet both take place in the region of Paldea , widely believed to be inspired by Spain, and perhaps the entirety of the Iberian Peninsula. It’s the first truly open-world-style Pokemon game, which should let you go where you want when you want to with three different storylines, all part of your school's "Treasure Hunt" assignment, to follow at your d...
Pilotwings 64's New Frame Rate Is Breaking the Game

An improved frame rate on Pilotwings 64 is causing problems on Nintendo Switch. The classic flight sim came to Nintendo Switch Online via the Expansion Pak earlier this month, boasting an improved frame rate compared to its original N64 release. Unfortunately, it’s making certain parts of the game unplayable. “I thought I was doing something wrong or the buttons were mapped weirdly,” said IGN’s Peer Schneider who has been playing Pilotwings 64. “They have to patch it. It's just not fun this way.” Although most of the game is unaffected, problems arise during the Birdman bonus stage. Usually a relaxing tour of the island, allowing players to take pictures and soak up the atmosphere, the Birdman stage is renowned for its calm, laid-back gameplay. The player suits up with a large set of wings, hitting the A button occasionally to keep the Birdman in the air. Unfortunately, the timing of these flaps was originally tied to the game’s framerate, so you can see where this is going...

There's more than meets the eye (and ear) to the already ominous Silent Hill: Townfall trailer, as NoCode and Annapurna have hidden a secret message within its audio. Following a tease from co-producer NoCode's creative director Jon McKellan that the trailer includes some secrets, Reddit user MilkmanEX extracted its audio and converted it to an MP3. When viewing the audio's spectrogram, at around 52 seconds in, the secret message appears. IGN has verified its existence ourselves, and the message reads: "Whatever heart this town had has now stopped". While we still know practically nothing about Townfall, and aren't expecting any new information until 2023, the message likely alludes to the game's premise. The Reddit post's comment section has already exploded with theories, with fans generally thinking that the player will be called to this town to save whatever may be left, or at least figure out what went wrong. The tone of the secret mess...

HoYoverse, the company behind Genshin Impact, Tears of Themis, and others, has released a new animated Genshin Impact trailer called "Scenery and Sentiment: Mondstadt Edition" that showcases Genshin Impact's first region. In it, notable NPCs from Mondstadt are shown briefly throughout, living their lives in and around the windswept town. HoYoverse shared that this trailer was produced by Danish animation studio, Sun Creature Studio, clearly noting it's different from their animated series project with Ufotable. It's unclear whether this trailer is meant to be a scenic advertisement for Genshin Impact, a continued piece to celebrate the game's second anniversary, or something more. At the very least, it's possible to imagine HoYoverse will release more of these to feature the other three major regions in Genshin Impact based on the trailer's name. Sun Creature Studio has experience with short licensed projects. It's done several animation proj...

Silent Hill: Ascension's announcement left a lot of unanswered questions, but one of its creators has shed some light on what fans can actually expect - including the fact that the interactive streaming event will only ever run once. Speaking to a well-known Silent Hill leaker known as Dusk Golem on Twitter (below), CEO of Genvid (a streaming software tools company working on the game) Jacob Navok revealed that Ascension is a narrative-based, branching choice cloud streaming experiment. Konami is essentially going to stream, only once, a choose your own adventure-style Silent Hill mini-series where the stream's chat will collectively decide what happens, essentially letting the fanbase create its own Silent Hill canon. Crucially, it will only ever be aired once, according to Navok. One of these is the seamless gameplay made possible by the console's SSD storage system. "One last great improvement I want to mention is the SSD storage technology," Lenart said. "The superfast data streaming means players won’t see any loading screens as they seamlessly explore the entirety of the Silent Hill town." He also explained how the PS5's 3D Audio and DualSense controller allow for greater levels of immersion, allowing Bloomer Team "to make Silent Hill 2 an even more harrowing and unforgettable experience for fans old and new. ...

After confirming its imminent arrival earlier this month at PAX Aus 2022, new free-to-play, first-person shooter World Boss has arrived today in Early Access on Steam. Developed by PlaySide Studios, World Boss had been previously available to try during its open beta playtest. World Boss is described as a casual, drop-in shooter with roguelite elements. According to PlaySide World Boss is also inspired by IO games, which is a genre of typically browser-based, free-to-play games loosely defined by their simple graphics and general accessibility. “With World Boss, we took the quick drop-in and drop-out nature of IO games, the customisation of roguelites, and the strategy and mechanical finesse of a first person shooter, to create a familiar-yet-unique FPS for everyone,’ said PlaySide CEO Gerry Sakkas in a statement released alongside the launch. “One of our goals with World Boss has been to bring our community closer to the development process. Throughout the beta period, we’ve bee...
Silent Hill f Revealed as a New Game Set in 1960s Japan

As part of today's Silent Hill festivities, Konami announced Silent Hill f, a new story set in 1960s Japan. Described as juxtaposing a world view of “beautiful, therefore horrifying,” Silent Hill f is being written by Ryukishi07, the acclaimed Japanese visual novel writer behind the Higurashi and Umineko series. The atmospheric trailer shows a scenic, but sinister, Japanese town that's becoming engulfed in some kind of fungus. The ending of the trailer, however, is genuinely terrifying with a woman covered in fungus. Having worked with stories that deal heavily with psychological and supernatural horror, Ryukishi07 is a great choice for writer on a new Silent Hill game. The setting is also unique for the series given that Silent Hill is a town in the United States. But the spinoff will likely expand upon the lore of the series. The game is also being developed by Neobard, a studio in China that has helped develop Capcom's most recent games like Resident Evil Re:Verse...

Today's Silent Hill announcements were not confined to just the games world. We also learned during the Silent Hill Transmission livestream that something called Silent Hill Ascension is in the works, and it appears to be some kind of live and possibly interactive experience in the Silent Hill universe. The trailer showed images of chat bubbles from users discussing whether or not they could save "her," and the segment ended with "Live 2023". We also learned that it's being made through a partnership with streaming software tools company Genvid, J.J. Abrams' film and TV production company gaming arm Bad Robot Games, Dead by Daylight studio Behaviour Interactive, and video-game-to-TV specialist production company dj2 Entertainment. With those names on board, we can probably guess that this will be some sort of hybrid video game/livestreamed experience with an interactive component, but we'll have to wait for more details to be sure. God of War Ragnarok Had to 'Get Creative' to Deal With Atreus Actor's Changing Voice

Atreus may have matured by God of War Ragnarok, but so did his voice actor. During a new behind-the-scenes video , supervising dialogue designer Jodie Kupsco explained how puberty caused trouble for the God of War sequel. “Our actor for Atreus, Sunny [Suljic], is a teenage boy, and his voice changed dramatically throughout several years on this title,” she explained. “We had to go in and even-out that performance so it sounds like it took place over a short period of time. That was a unique challenge on this one.” An extended production period due to the pandemic meant that the God of War Ragnarok team not only had to think creatively to get around Suljic’s rapidly changing voice, but also how to film cinematics on a motion capture soundstage that was limited by pandemic rules. “We avoided compromising the story we were trying to tell as a result of the pandemic and these limitations we had to deal with,” said senior producer, Ariel Angelotti. “There were no cinematics that we ...
