Weird West Review
In this alternate universe, the West was won by trying a bunch of ideas so crazy they just might work… and if they don’t, hitting the quick-load button to revert to an earlier save and trying something even crazier until you pull it off. Thanks to that freedom to experiment with its world as you explore, Weird West is one of those games that feels like a stealth and combat playground even as it tells five mostly serious, well-written stories with interesting decisions throughout and a thoughtful conclusion. And with so much ground to cover and replayability to investigate, it’s well worth putting up with some quirks and underwhelming loot. What ties Weird West’s plot together is a group of shadowy figures using a magical brand to force your character’s consciousness into the bodies of various unsuspecting people. It’s a clever play on the way so many games have us take control of a character who already exists in that world but still need to bring us up to speed on their identity: h...
Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader – How Did it Take This Long to Get a Warhammer CRPG?
It’s truly bizarre that across the nearly 30 years of Warhammer video games, we haven’t had a single one that attempted to channel the tabletop Warhammer experience by utilizing the genre that feels best suited to do so: CRPGs. But that’s all about to change, as Pathfinder developer Owlcats has been cooking up something to fill this void. During an extensive hands-off demo of Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, I checked out its extremely chunky turn-based combat system, drowned in its plethora of dialogue options and social skill checks, and nodded approvingly at its lovingly faithful depiction of Warhammer’s morbid universe. While it’s still very early, so far this CRPG is shaping up to be everything I’ve wanted from a Warhammer video game. If you’ve ever played (or even glanced at) a game of Warhammer 40K, then you probably know it’s designed for a hyper-specific kind of nerd who loves calculations, large-scale drama, and an incredibly detailed world one could easily get lost in. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League may focus on Task Force X taking down the beloved superhero team, and the universe the game takes place in is actually one that will be familiar to fans of developer Rocksteady Studios. Speaking during DC FanDome, Rocksteady Studios' Sefton Hill confirmed Suicide Squad is a "continuation of the Arkhamverse" that began in Batman: Arkham Asylum and came to its seeming end in Batman: Arkham Knight. Hill explained that Suicide Squad is part of this world and will actually let players see the continuation of plot threads and characters first introduced in those Arkham games. Gotham Knights: WB Games Montreal Explains Why It Killed Batman

WB Games Montreal says it chose to have Gotham Knights begin with a dead Batman in order to take away "any certainty, any feeling of safety" in its world. Speaking at DC FanDome during the Legacy of the Bat panel, creative director Patrick Redding explained that Gotham Knights' Batman has been fighting crime for around 15 years, before being killed in still-unexplained circumstances. "We wanted to take away any certainty, any feeling of safety," Redding explained. "So we could take a Gotham City where Bruce Wayne has been operating as Batman for, like, 15 years - with all that history, his whole network of allies - and then take him out of the picture. It really demands players figure out, 'How would I step up, and how would I protect Gotham City?'" That lack of certainty could perhaps signal a game that's more willing to see other major characters killed off during its runtime. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/22/bat...

Apple has responded to Epic’s antitrust lawsuit in a legal filing made public today that says Epic did request a special deal from Apple, contrary to what Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has said publicly. As reported by CNBC , former Apple senior vice president Phil Schiller wrote that “On June 30, 2020, Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeney wrote my colleagues and me an email asking,” for a special deal that would “fundamentally change the way in which Epic offers apps on Apple’s iOS platform.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/13/fortnite-1984-apple-parody-video-short"] Specifically, Apple claims that Epic requested to offer an Epic Games Store app on the App Store that would let iOS users install apps directly from Epic and bypass Apple’s payment processing options. Apple goes on to say that Epic’s request for an injunction to stop Apple from removing Epic’s developer account isn’t valid as any harm happening to Epic is “self-inflicted.” “All of the injury Epic claims to itself, g...

Outriders World Tier Challenge - IGN First

Outriders has an interesting approach to difficulty. Instead of choosing easy, medium, or hard, there’s a dynamic difficulty system called World Tiers. As you become more skilled and survive for longer, the game increases the world tier, which introduces tougher enemies and hands out better loot. There are 15 World Tiers, and unlocking the highest tiers demands skill and persistence. While you can always reduce the World Tier if things get too tough, or even decide to play the game on the one tier of your liking, reaching the World Tier 15 will likely become a target for many Outriders players. And so this gave us an idea for a challenge: can we survive Outriders’ most punishing World Tiers? And how far towards Tier 15 can we make it? [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/21/outriders-can-we-reach-world-tier-15-ign-first"] You can see how we got on in the video above. Epic Games has turned its feud with Apple into an in-game Fortnite event, the #FreeFortnite Cup. Epic Games released a blog post detailing an in-game tournament meant to "celebrate the quest for one more Victory Royale with friends across all platforms." What it really is though, beyond a final chance for iOS users to play with others before the game is updated for Chapter 2 - Season 4 (an update iOS players will currently not be able to install), is another opportunity for Epic Games to highlight its ongoing feud with Apple. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/13/fortnite-1984-apple-parody-video-short"] This problems came to a head last week when Epic Games lowered the price of V-Bucks across all platforms, including a new "direct payment" option on mobile devices. This was done in an effort to call out companies like Apple on "exorbitant" payment fees in the process. Apple removed Fortnite from its App Store soon after as the di...
Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time Review

A definitive ending to an excellent story is a truly precious thing. That’s part of why Samurai Jack’s return for a final season in 2017 was so refreshing, as it capped off the legendary cartoon show with an appropriately epic and conclusive sendoff. Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time makes a risky choice, then, by attempting to squeeze one more thrilling adventure out of the series post-finale, but it handles that responsibility with care – and manages to be an enjoyable trip into the past of the action game genre in the process. For those who weren’t tuning into Cartoon Network in the early 2000s, Samurai Jack is about the titular warrior fighting to return to the past and slay the evil wizard Aku. Battle Through Time cleverly posits that Aku had one more trick up his sleeve: he interrupts Jack’s trip back through time and forces the samurai to relive his most exciting battles. The year 2020 is more than halfway through (thank goodness) so it’s time for us to refresh our list of the 25 best PC games to play right now. Times have changed, both in the PC gaming landscape and in the makeup of our PC gaming staff and contributors, and that means that outside of some real stalwarts we’ve got a substantially different list this time around. To be clear, this list does not attempt to pick out the “best” or “most influential” PC games ever made. It’s also not a list of the most popular games out there, or a list that seeks to represent the top games of every genre (sorry Total War: Three Kingdoms – you came close!). No, this is a list of games that we, the IGN editors and contributors, collectively recommend the most, based on our own tastes, and all from within the past 10 years. Think of it as our staff’s personal recommendations to you for games we think you should play if you haven’t. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/20/the-top-10-modern-p...
