Weird West Review
In this alternate universe, the West was won by trying a bunch of ideas so crazy they just might work… and if they don’t, hitting the quick-load button to revert to an earlier save and trying something even crazier until you pull it off. Thanks to that freedom to experiment with its world as you explore, Weird West is one of those games that feels like a stealth and combat playground even as it tells five mostly serious, well-written stories with interesting decisions throughout and a thoughtful conclusion. And with so much ground to cover and replayability to investigate, it’s well worth putting up with some quirks and underwhelming loot. What ties Weird West’s plot together is a group of shadowy figures using a magical brand to force your character’s consciousness into the bodies of various unsuspecting people. It’s a clever play on the way so many games have us take control of a character who already exists in that world but still need to bring us up to speed on their identity: h...
Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader – How Did it Take This Long to Get a Warhammer CRPG?
It’s truly bizarre that across the nearly 30 years of Warhammer video games, we haven’t had a single one that attempted to channel the tabletop Warhammer experience by utilizing the genre that feels best suited to do so: CRPGs. But that’s all about to change, as Pathfinder developer Owlcats has been cooking up something to fill this void. During an extensive hands-off demo of Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, I checked out its extremely chunky turn-based combat system, drowned in its plethora of dialogue options and social skill checks, and nodded approvingly at its lovingly faithful depiction of Warhammer’s morbid universe. While it’s still very early, so far this CRPG is shaping up to be everything I’ve wanted from a Warhammer video game. If you’ve ever played (or even glanced at) a game of Warhammer 40K, then you probably know it’s designed for a hyper-specific kind of nerd who loves calculations, large-scale drama, and an incredibly detailed world one could easily get lost in. Amazon has canceled its Lord of the Rings MMORPG that was first announced in 2019. As reported by Bloomberg, the game was in development at Amazon Games Studios alongside China-based Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd, which was purchased by Tencent Holdings Ltd. in December 2020. The contract negotiations between Amazon and Tencent were said to have caused a dispute that eventually led to the game's cancellation. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that, following Tencent's acquisition of Leyou, that it had "been unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time." The team will be shifted to other projects, and Amazon shared its disappointment in not being able to bring this project to the world. “We love the Lord of the Rings IP, and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers," a spokesperson for Amazon said. Outriders Review

Now that I’ve had time to fully blast my way through Outriders, it’s time for our final review – we appreciate your patience! Now, People Can Fly’s gritty, blood-and-guts take on the co-op looter-shooter RPG genre definitely delivers great action that’s kicked up a notch by impressive sci-fi super powers, some cool world design, and a pretty satisfying loot grind. At the same time, an occasionally clunky interface, some persistent bugs, and a messy story make it seem less like a big-budget science-fiction epic and more like a guilty pleasure Sy-Fy Channel™ original series. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/outriders-playstation-vs-xbox-vs-pc-performance-review"] That’s not necessarily a bad thing, of course - sure, SyFy might be responsible for Defiance and Hunters, but it also gave us modern classics like Battlestar Galactica and... The Expanse is pretty good, too! (It had to be saved from cancelation by Amazon Prime Video, but that’s beside the point! ) Outriders ...

Mario Kart 8, which includes the Wii U original and Nintendo Switch's Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, has become the best-selling racing game in US history. As reported by The NPD Group's Mat Piscatella, Mario Kart 8 has finally surpassed Mario Kart Wii, which was released in 2008. While we don't know the exact sales numbers in the US, Mario Kart 8 was originally released on the Wii U in 2014 and has sold 8.45 million units globally as of September 30, 2020. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was released on the Switch in 2017 and has, as of December 31, 2020, sold 33.41 million units globally. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/04/20/mario-kart-8-deluxe-review"] Mario Kart Wii, on the other hand, has sold 37.38 million units as of September 30, 2020. While both Mario Kart 8s have sold more than Mario Kart Wii at 41.86 million units globally, this is one of the first confirmations that Mario Kart 8 has surpassed Mario Kart Wii in the US. Following a firmware update this week, LEGO Mario has began calling out for his long-lost brother Luigi, who has yet to get the official LEGO treatment. As reported by Eurogamer, footage of this clever, if a bit haunting bit of marketing appeared on Twitter thanks to those like @AyliffeMakit, which shows LEGO Mario waking up from a nap and calling out for Luigi. IGN has confirmed that this does work, and it will occur if you update LEGO Mario's firmware, let him go to sleep after a minute or so, and then wake him up. It took me about 20 tries to get the Luigi call-out, so keep at it! In a clever, if a bit haunting bit of marketing, LEGO Mario is now calling out for his long-lost brother Luigi, who has yet to get the LEGO treatment! Looks like the Year of Luigi is back! In its first five months on the market, The PlayStation 5 has become the fastest-selling console in U.S. history in both unit and dollar sales. As revealed by The NPD Group's Mat Piscatella, this news arrives one month after the PS5 became the fastest-selling console in U.S. history in dollar sales. Despite that new record, the Nintendo Switch has continued its reign as the best selling hardware platform in both units and dollars during March 2021. However, the PS5 did rank first in hardware dollar sales in Q1 2021. Tingle seems to love the ocean. How else to explain his steady presence in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker , where the peculiar sprite continually pops up to aid (or hamper) Link's quest with items like the Tingle Tuner? Heck, he even has his very own island. In today's sprawling interview with IGN, which you should absolutely go read , outgoing developer Takaya Imamura explained Tingle's outsized presence in Wind Waker. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2013/09/17/the-legend-of-zelda-wind-waker-hd-video-review"] "I was helping out on The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker when it was still in its planning phase, but at the same time I was working on Star Fox Adventures with Rare, and I ended up having to focus on the latter," Imamura explained, laughing. "So If you ever wondered why Tingle appears so often in Wind Waker, now you know why." Tingle had already appeared in Majora's Mask and Oracle of Ages , but his stint in Wind Wak...

Takaya Imamura, the now-retired Nintendo artist and designer who helped create The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and characters like Captain Falcon and Fox McCloud, has said that while F-Zero isn't dead, it is a series that is "hard to bring back" without a "grand idea." Imamura spoke to IGN about his 30-year career at Nintendo , and he revealed that he considers F-Zero GX to be "the ultimate F-Zero." However, 2003's F-Zero GX is 18 years old and is the last console F-Zero game to be released. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2011/04/14/f-zero-gx-gameplay"] While many Nintendo franchises have lived on with new entries, F-Zero has been quiet for nearly two decades, although it wasn't for lack of trying. “Of course, I’ve thought about it many times, but without a grand new idea, it’s hard to bring it back,” Imamura says. Despite that, Imamura reassures us that the F-Zero series isn't dead, even with him no longer bein...

After 32 years, Takaya Imamura has left Nintendo. Imamura was a key development team member on classic games like Star Fox, F-Zero and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, and his retirement became a topic of conversation throughout the industry when he announced it on Twitter back in January. IGN was lucky enough to sit down with Imamura for a lengthy talk about his career with the legendary video game company. As of today, Imamura has become a professor at the International Professional University of Technology in Osaka , a new college that opened this April. While teaching CG Animation and video game development, Imamura is working on his own manga in his free time. He is also open to the idea of working on smaller indie games as a freelance developer. 32 years in a single job is a long time. When asked how he looks back on such a defining period of his life, Imamura needs some time to find an answer. [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="602"] Takay...
