Phantom: Covert Ops Review

Let me say up front that I’m in no way saying that no special forces commando has ever stealthily infiltrated an enemy stronghold exclusively via kayak without ever setting foot on land. I mean, if such a soldier exists, they must be such a badass that no one has ever seen them and lived. But for the sake of argument, let’s say it’s a goofy premise for a VR stealth game, and Phantom: Covert Ops leans into it hard enough that it sort of works. Given the fact that you’re effectively half man, half boat it’s bemusing how seriously Phantom: Covert Ops takes itself. You’ve got the amazingly generic name, and the paint-by-numbers Tom Clancy story about a former Soviet madman planning a biological weapons attack is played 100 percent straight, smack-talking villains and all. All of that is relayed to you through voices over a radio. It’s practically self-parody. The Best Cyberpunk Anime for Newcomers

Image
2020 may be the year of Cyberpunk 2077, but developer CD Projekt Red has more than just a video game in the pipeline. Announced during the Night City Wire broadcast, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a collaborative project between famed anime powerhouse Studio Trigger and streaming giant Netflix that will see Night City expand beyond its video game roots, venturing into the territory of animation for a 10-episode series that’ll feature new characters and story set within the game’s grim world of tomorrow. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners won’t be released until 2022, so what’s a fan of cybernetic enhancements and dystopian future worlds supposed to do until then? Watch some other cyberpunk anime, of course! There’s no shortage of material within that genre, as the last few decades have given birth to not only classic examinations of how technology could impact humanity, but also modern-day masterpieces that have helped to shape the world of entertainment. Here’s a look at 10 essential anime cyberpunk s

Marvel's Iron Man VR New Combat, World Details Revealed

Marvel's Iron Man VR is set to be released on PlayStation VR on July 3, 2020, and developer Camouflaj has given us one last look at the game's combat, world, and all-star cast before next week. Marvel's Iron Man VR's director Ryan Payton of Camouflaj took to PlayStation.Blog to give fans an "unprecedented look at what you can expect from the full game." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/04/02/iron-man-vr-hands-on-impressions"] Big & Open Environments The environments in Marvel's Iron Man VR needed to be huge to accommodate for players flying at high speeds as Tony Stark. Payton confirms that "you can fit twenty-three entire world instances of République into the initial Maliby environment." République was Camouflaj's first game. Payton continued by discussing some of the environments players will travel to as Iron Man, including a fully realized S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier that Iron Man can fly in and outside of. Ano

The Last of Us Part 2 is the New Gold Standard For Accessibility

Image
The Last of Us Part 2 has officially arrived and it's time we take a good long look at its incredible suite of accessibility features. First off, I'm a deaf gamer with little to no hearing since birth, and I have to rely on visual information like captioning/subtitles to understand what's going on. One thing I want to point out: accessibility works differently for everyone. It's never a one size fit all, and what works for me may not work for others, and what works for them may not work for me. It's important to try to find enough options that can  work for everyone, and The Last of Us Part 2 has come as close to this as any AAA game that’s come before. For reference, you can find a list of The Last of Us 2 Accessibility features here from Playstation. Before I started exploring Accessibility options, I jumped into Subtitles. I turned on Story & Combat Dialogue subtitles because I hate when someone is talking during the fight and I have no idea what they'

Sea of Thieves Takes a Step Toward Providing Friends-Only Servers

Sea of Thieves will get custom servers in the "near future," according to developer Rare. Custom servers have been a widely-requested feature and it seems that Rare has heard the requests. In a blog post made on June 25, Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate explained the feature will be coming to the game in the form of an early Alpha version. This Alpha version will be open to select creators and community groups. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-xbox-one-first-party-review&captions=true"] "We have been working for a while on formalising this support, and in the near future we're going to bring an early Alpha version of Custom Servers to Sea of Thieves as a tool for selected creators and community groups to utilise for community events," Neate said. "We will be working with these creators and community groups to test Custom Servers in a live environment, to gather feedback and prioritise

[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=disco-elysium-18-screenshots&captions=true"] Disco Elysium is a critically-acclaimed RPG set in a futuristic world of Elysium. The player wakes up with no memory and is immediately tasked with solving a murder that leads him through different political factions and plotlines. It only gets much weirder from there. “We’re so gratified at the response Disco Elysium has received and very happy to be teaming with dj2 to expand the franchise for other media and new audience

Square Enix Will Announce 'Several' New Games in July and August

Square Enix will announce new games in July and August, if a recent stockholder meeting is any indication. The company held a stockholders' meeting on June 24 and, when asked about how the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has affected plans to announce new games, a Square Enix representative said new games were originally to be announced at the now-cancelled E3. "We would normally announce new games at E3, yes," a Square Enix spokesperson said, according to a Gematsu translation of a No Investment, No Life story. "We had planned to have a press conference as a replacement event, but were unable to do so since assets were not complete. We'll be announcing new titles individually as timing permits. Several will debut around July to August." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-ign-final-fantasy-game-review&captions=true"] This answer reveals not only that new games will be announced next month and in August

Dying Light - Hellraid DLC Release Date Set for July

Techland has announced the release date for the Hellraid DLC coming to Dying Light. The dark fantasy-themed content will now be released on July 23 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 for $9.99. Dying Light - Hellraid will also get a beta this weekend for anyone who pre-orders the DLC on Steam. Dying Light - Hellraid is a DLC expansion to Dying Light , Techland’s open-world zombie game. This is not a full-on standalone game, but rather DLC content the developers created while the originally announced Hellraid project is on hold. Techland is not working on the full Hellraid at this time. Instead the studio is developing Dying Light 2. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/26/dying-light-hellraid-release-date-trailer"] In the new release date trailer above, you can see players explore a dark fantasy world where instead of zombies, they fight demonic hellspawn while using medieval weapons. There will be both single-player and co-op options as well. The pre-order beta

Microsoft to Permanently Close All But 4 Physical Stores

Microsoft has announced that it will be permanently closing all of its retail stores, while four physical locations in London, NYC, Sydney, and Redmond will be re-imagined as Microsoft Experience Centers. Microsoft announced the news and said that "the company’s retail team members will continue to serve customers from Microsoft corporate facilities and remotely providing sales, training, and support." Microsoft has told The Verge that no layoffs will result from today's decision. Microsoft closed its retail stores in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and had yet to re-open them. Since then, there focus has obviously shifted to its digital storefronts on Microsoft.com and the stores on both Xbox and Windows PC, which "reach more than 1.2 billion people every month in 190 markets." “We deliberately built teams with unique backgrounds and skills that could serve customers from anywhere. The evolution of our workforce ensured we could continue to serve customer

The Last of Us Part 2 Is the Fastest-Selling PS4 Exclusive Ever

The Last of Us Part II has officially sold through over 4 million copies as of June 21, 2020, making it the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive ever. Senior Vice President of PlayStation Worldwide Marketing at SIE Eric Lempel took to PlayStation.Blog to reveal the milestone, all but confirming that The Last of Us Part 2 has surpassed Marvel's Spider-Man as the fastest-selling exclusive for the PlayStation 4 in its first three days. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/20/14-brilliant-little-details-in-the-last-of-us-part-2"] Neil Druckmann, Vice President of Naughty Dog and Director of The Last of Us Part II, also shared a message with fans of the post-apocalyptic game we called a "Masterpiece." "We are so immensely grateful to the millions of fans around the world that have played The Last of Us Part II and shared their experiences with us over the last week," Druckmann said. "We set out to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with

The Last of Us Part 2: 'No Plans' for DLC

The Last of Us Part 2's director, Neil Druckmann has made clear that there are 'no plans' for DLC after the game's launch. Speaking during a spoilercast for the game on the Kinda Funny Gamescast , Druckmann was asked about whether the new game would follow the original's lead with a Left Behind-style story DLC. "No, with Last of Us I think we had some season pass or something that said ahead of time we have some story DLC - no there's no plans for that." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/12/the-last-of-us-part-2-review"] This doesn't discount a multiplayer take on the game, like The Last of Us' Factions mode, as we've previously heard that that will be released as a standalone game of some kind . The wording of the original announcement - which said "when and where it will be realized is still to be determined" - could suggest the mode will arrive on PS5 . We awarded The Last of Us Part 2 a full 10/10 rev

Cyberpunk 2077: PC-Exclusive Ray-Tracing Effects Revealed

The PC-exclusive ray-tracing effects coming to Cyberpunk 2077 have been revealed by Nvidia. As part of the graphics card manufacturer's technical partnership with CD Projekt Red, Nvidia is bringing four immersive ray-traced effects to Cyberpunk 2077 , which will enhance the game's performance and fine-tune its fidelity. You check out screenshots of the effects in action below: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=cyberpunk-2077-pc-ray-tracing-screenshots&captions=true"] These immersion-bolstering effects include Ray-Traced Diffuse Illumination, which "captures sky radiance" and emissive lighting to ensure that the sun and moon "realistically illuminate Night City." The game will also feature Ray-Traced Reflections which as you might have guessed, make reflections more realistic in how they simulate the way light affects surfaces. Ray-Traced Ambient Occlusion will also affect the game's shading tech on P

Assetto Corsa Competizione Review

Assetto Corsa Competizione is the exclusively GT3-focused offshoot of the fan-favourite, mod-friendly Assetto Corsa. That darling of the PC racing simulator community was ported to console back in 2016 to mixed results. Competizione, though, is in most ways a vastly better racer than its broader progenitor: there’s night racing, there’s dynamic weather, and the AI is leaps and bounds more civilised and capable of battling fair and yielding corners. The problem is the console versions’ performance and control issues make it seem like it wasn’t quite ready to be released yet. [ignvideo width=610 height=374 url=https://ift.tt/2Q9lJq5] There are, no doubt, fans out there that will regard the contraction in total content between the original Assetto Corsa and Competizione disappointing, because scaling down to a single racing discipline means Competizione admittedly sheds a lot of surplus rides and racetracks. However, I think Competizione’s laser-like focus on a single underrepresented sch

Diablo 4: Open World Side Activities Detailed

Diablo 4's developers recently ran a two-day playtest, and have reported back on some of their findings. That includes the game's open world side activities, how its shared world shouldn't ever feel crowded, and more. In a lengthy report on the playtest, which took place in the game's Dry Steppes area (which we saw at the game's BlizzCon 2019 reveal ), several of the game's new features were covered. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/11/02/diablo-4-hands-on-gameplay-impressions-blizzcon-2019"] Open World Activities While Diablo 4 still features a linear story campaign, its new open world allows for variety of side activities - the playtest revealed that those who didn't mainline the story campaign ended up playing for roughly twice as long as those who did. Side activities includ crafting, world events, PvP and side quests. The playtest's most popular activities, however, were Camps, clearable outposts dotted across the game world
