IGN UK Podcast #643: Doctor Strange in the Desperate Search for Seal Meat

You Probably Shouldn't Peel Off the Protective Screen on Your New Switch - OLED Model

As many around the world have begun enjoying their brand-new Nintendo Switch - OLED Models, some have noticed that it comes with a protective screen already on it. According to Nintendo, it should not be removed as it will protect the users from any harm should the new glass screen break. This "anti-scattering adhesive film" is a new addition by Nintendo as the original Switch and Switch Lite had no need for it as their screens were made of plastic whereas the OLED Model is made of glass. If the screen were to break, shards of sharp glass could cause harm, and this protective screen will help prevent any damage to the user being done. It also will help prevent any scratches on the screen as well. We reached out to Nintendo for comment and it confirmed that the protective screen should stay on alongside mentioning that users can also add another screen protector on top of it if they so choose. "As indicated on page 2 of the Nintendo Switch OLED Health and Safety Inf...

Jade Raymond's New PlayStation Exclusive Will Include Social Elements and User-Generated Content

Jade Raymond has said that Haven's upcoming PlayStation exclusive game will include social elements and user-generated content, adding that it's being created by many of the devs behind the original Assassin's Creed. Earlier this year, it was announced that Raymond had started Haven Entertainment Studios , an independent company in Montreal currently working on an unannounced new IP for PlayStation. During an interview with GamesIndustry.biz , the studio boss delved a little further into what fans can expect from the game and exactly who's making it. "There are three things that are really exciting me, which are also pillars for the way that we're thinking about things," says Raymond. "First is games as a social platform. The pandemic has proven that gameplay is the social glue that binds communities. Especially for the younger generation, this is what you do and how you make friends and hang out. That is something that we really want to build an...

Resident Evil 7 Becomes the First Game in the Series to Ship 10 Million Copies

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard has become the first game in the series to ship over ten million copies, Capcom confirms. As announced in a press release , Capcom says that Resident Evil 7 has set new milestones for the company as it becomes the first game in the series to ship over ten million units globally. It's worth pointing out that shipped copies are those sent to retailers, as opposed to sold copies, which have been bought by players. According to the studio, the game's impressive figures have largely been down to the "promotion of digital sales" and "synergies" with the series' latest installment, Resident Evil: Village, which launched in May. The latest news from the studio comes after a string of successes for the series. In 2020, the Resident Evil brand set new records for Capcom after it became the first in its history to exceed 100 million units sold worldwide . That being said, it doesn't look like slowing down either. Capcom announce...

Marvel's Avengers Adds Paid XP Boosts, and Fans are in Uproar

Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have added the option to pay for XP and resource collection boosts using real money in Marvel's Avengers. The move has been slated by many fans who believe it offers a stark contrast to previous statements made surrounding the game's monetization tactics. Marvel's Avengers' recent addition to Xbox Game Pass is likely to have brought a range of new players to the game. For pre-existing fans, however, news of the game's move to the new platform was shortly followed by the more troubling reality that its in-game marketplace now offers players the option to purchase boost-based 'consumables' using credits that can only be acquired through spending real money. As reported by VGC , the game's new consumables can be purchased to temporarily increase the amount of XP and resources that a player can acquire while playing the game. This essentially allows for fans to make faster progress - so long as they're happy to spen...

EA Exec Can't See FIFA Dropping Loot Boxes, Even Amid Potential Law Changes

An EA executive has said that can't see FIFA's approach to monetisation in its lucrative Ultimate Team mode changing, even amid law changes that could see loot boxes classed as gambling. In an interview with Eurogamer , EA Chief Experience Officer Chris Bruzzo was asked how the company would react if the UK – one of FIFA's major markets – began to classify loot boxes (and thus FIFA Ultimate Team packs) as gambling. "Most importantly, we will work with government," Bruzzo began. "We are ready. We're already at the table. We continue to bring actions all the time. We'll bring more. We're ready." However, Bruzzo continued by saying he can't see monetized loot boxes changing, due to their apparent importance in providing the funding to continue developing FIFA games year-round. After explaining that the evolution of gaming now means that developers can no longer take breaks after the release of a game, Bruzzo said, "So if we're ...

Yakuza Creator Toshihiro Nagoshi Confirms Sega Departure Alongside Yakuza: Like a Dragon Sequel Announcement

Yakuza series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi has confirmed that he will be leaving both Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and SEGA. As part of the restructuring announcement, RGG Studio also confirmed it is currently working on a sequel to Yakuza: Like a Dragon. This news from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and Nagoshi follows a report that said Chinese developer and publisher NetEase was in "final negotiations" with Nagoshi to hire him away from SEGA, the company he has been with since 1989. Nagoshi, in a statement, didn't reveal what his next move was, but he did confirm that he was leaving SEGA and RGG Studio. "As I depart from SEGA, I’m also leaving my position as the head of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio," Nagoshi wrote. "Thank you to the fans who have supported us and the Yakuza series for many years. You have my sincerest and deepest gratitude. "I persisted and am here now thanks to what I learned from many people around me. It’s credit to the colleagues who supported such...

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl Review

The idea of a Super Smash Bros. -style platform fighter that brings together some of Nickelodeon’s most beloved cartoons across multiple generations is one that just makes so much sense, and it’s kind of a wonder that it’s taken this long for something like Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl to come around. But despite Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl’s clear inspirations, developer Ludosity has made a notable effort to differentiate its mechanics and the overall flow of combat from Smash Bros., resulting in a fighter that is way faster than any Smash game has been since Melee in 2001. This puts All-Star Brawl in a great spot as an alternative to Smash Ultimate that’s available on practically every platform – but its subpar use of its wealth of source material, along with a general lack of polish and a few irksome mechanics, does mean it’s not a recommendation that comes without a few significant caveats. The first thing that comes across while playing All-Star Brawl is that this feels like a ga...

Best Buy Will Have Nintendo Switch OLEDs in Stock Tomorrow

The Nintendo Switch OLED model will release tomorrow. If you already own a Switch, it might not be worth the upgrade; but if you are looking to pick up the latest Switch model , Best Buy will have the console in stock tomorrow, according to its website. Heading to the Nintendo Switch OLED landing page , Best Buy has a countdown timer to prepare for the release of the hybrid gaming console. We reached out to Best Buy for comment on when the restocks will be firmly available, but the countdown implies that it could be available when the timer hits zero. The landing page offers listings for both the White and Neon Red/Neon Blue Switch OLED consoles, though there are also a ton of new listings, bundling one of the Switch OLED colors along with either a carrying case, a copy of Metroid Dread (which also releases tomorrow), or all three items together. The Nintendo Switch OLED was originally announced back in July and features a slightly larger OLED display. The new Switch model use...

Destiny 2 Will Lose The Forsaken Expansion to the Vault

Bungie has announced that the Destiny 2 Forsaken campaign will enter the Destiny Content Vault early next year. Players can still access the content until February 22, at which point the campaign as well as the Tangled Shore desination will leave the game. This is the same day as the launch of Year 5 of Destiny 2, which includes The Witch Queen expansion. Bungie says Forsaken's departure also makes way for new features including weapon crafting, a Legendary difficulty campaign option, a new weapon type, and more. If you haven't played the Forsaken campaign, it will be available for free to all Destiny players beginning on December 7. Bungie created the Destiny Content Vault last year as a way to begin recycling content from Destiny 1 and 2. Last year, Bungie added three campaigns to the vault: The Red War, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind. Besides campaigns, the vault can also include strikes, gambit maps, raids, and other content. It's a big time for Bungie's univ...

Koichi Sugiyama, the Pioneering Dragon Quest Composer Known For His Controversial Views, Has Died

Koichi Sugiyama, the composer who defined a generation of RPGs with his music but was also known for his controversial views on LGBTQ+ people and Japan's action in World War II, has died. He was 90 years old. Like Nobuo Uematsu and a handful of other pioneering composers, Koichi Sugiyama helped define music on the Famicom in the mid-1980s. Known primarily for his work on Dragon Quest, he started as a director at Fuji TV and later worked on projects including Science Ninja Team Gatchaman: The Movie. Sugiyama joined Enix after sending the studio a postcard expressing his appreciation for a PC shogi game they had created. His work on the first Dragon Quest was considered revolutionary for the time. In a look back on the series, 1UP wrote that "he took his cues from classical composers and Wagnerian opera, resulting in a soundtrack that was deeper, heavier, and emotional than any other Famicom game, despite the hardware's strict limits. It's no accident that Sugiyama ...

Diablo 4 Has a New Director

Activision Blizzard is currently facing serious ongoing allegations of harassment and mistreatment of marginalized workers . To learn more, please visit our timeline as well as our in-depth report on the subject . Joe Shely, who has worked on World of Warcraft and DIablo 3, has taken over as director of Diablo 4. In today's Diablo 4 quarterly update , Shely said he is honored to continue the vision of the next Diablo as its director. The previous director, Luis Barriga, was let go from Activision Blizzard in August amid allegations of harassment and abuse within Blizzard. Barriga had been with Blizzard since 2006, and was let go alongside level designer Jesse McCree and WoW designer Jonatan LeCraft. In today's post, Shely briefly addressed the ongoing allegations. "Like many of you, our team has been reflecting upon recent events," Shely wrote. "A lot has happened since our last blog and the hard work of practicing the values we aspire to must contin...

Eidos MontrΓ©al Adopts a Four-Day Work Week

Eidos Montreal, the Square Enix-owned studio that developed Deus Ex: Human Revolution and is working on the Guardians of the Galaxy game, is switching to a four-day work week. The change also applies to Eidos-Sherbrooke, Eidos Montreal's support studio. The studio announced the change in a blog post , where Head of Studio David Anfossi said the move will help create a sustainable work environment. "The idea is not to condense the working hours into 4 days, but rather to review our ways of doing things and our quality time invested, with the aim of working better," Anfossi said. "Above all, we want to increase the productivity and well-being of our employees." The four-day, 32 hour work week will not impact any employee's salaries. Anfossi says one example of how the studio will make up the extra day is cutting unnecessary time spent in meetings. Eidos Montreal is one of the first examples we've seen of a Triple-A studio transitioning to the four-d...

Hackers Have Started to Invade the Battlefield 2042 Beta

After months of confidence from the Battlefield development team on Easy Anti-Cheat, images and videos have already started to circulate online of hacking during the Battlefield 2042 Beta. Cheater 😏 pic.twitter.com/ydwb4QaPK8 — conne0312 (@coone90) October 7, 2021 Although the hacks are not as sophisticated as those that struck the Call of Duty: Vanguard Beta a couple of weeks ago, footage online shows wallhacks, aimbot, and several other cheats. So far, we’ve identified three individual cheat providers providing cheats for Battlefield 2042. One cheat provider from China offers their cheats for just $2 per day, giving cheaters the opportunity to cheat during the whole Battlefield 2042 Beta for just $8. There are a few silver linings in the hacker problem though. I spoke with content creator MavriqGG , who is knowledgeable about the cheating scene, including its providers, developers, and more. “The reality is there’s no anti-cheat that is unbreakable,” Mavriq says. “What’...

The 10 Best Assassin's Creed Games

The Assassin’s Creed franchise has spanned the globe since it debuted in 2007, and entries have taken players from Renaissance Italy to Ancient Greece to the American Revolution. Along the way, the series has changed dramatically, from sequels that made good on the promise of past entries to entirely new takes on character progression. So which games are the best out of Ubisoft’s long-running series? IGN’s biggest Assassin’s Creed fans came together to agree, argue, and eventually cull together our favorites. It’s worth noting this list pulls from the mainline Assassin’s Creed series of console releases, so no mobile or handheld entries were considered as they vary greatly in scope and design. Without further ado, here are IGN’s top 10 Assassin’s Creed games. 10. Assassin's Creed Unity After the tipsy sway of Black Flag’s pirate protagonist Edward Kenway, Assassin’s Creed Unity was a return to the tone of original Assassin’s Creed. As the first AC game to be exclusively rele...

Battlefield 2042 Beta Build Is Already 'a Few Months Old'

The beta for Battlefield 2042 has already kicked off for EA play members and pre-order customers. However, according to its developer, DICE, the build that it's running on is an older version of the game that's already a few months old. As spotted by VGC , one of EA's lead community managers recently tweeted about the build that players are currently experiencing during 2042's open beta. "Our Open Beta is now a few months old," reads the tweet. "We polish and enhance it to make sure that it's representative of the game we've built, but naturally we're making daily improvements, changes, and enhancements all the time."
