Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between Is the Weird, Beautiful Night Drive My Brain Wants to Take

Image
Years ago, before I got into games media, I had a job that required me to drive around Kansas a lot, sometimes at night. If you've ever driven about a Midwestern state at night, you know the surreal experience of it - the darkness, the lack of cars, the strange, peaceful programs airing on late-night public radio stations, the quiet hum of a roadside convenience store with its eclectic beverage selection. In the midwest, there was also the haunting blinking sea of red lights in the distance. During the daytime, the truth of them would be obvious: turbines on one of Kansas' many wind farms. But at night, they looked like little alien ships landing in the distance. I never thought I'd find this experience replicated in a video game, but here we are with Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between. Glitchhikers evokes that exact kind of road trip I took in my early 20s while simultaneously reflecting what turns out to be a universal experience of traveling at night. In it, you are beh...

How Xbox Game Pass Became the Subscription Service to Beat

Four years ago, between the announcement of Xbox Game Pass and its launch, Microsoft’s vision for the “Netflix of games” had yet to come into focus. Phil Spencer and team Xbox were clear in its direction, though public perception surrounding the game subscription service was muddier: What did Game Pass mean for consumers? Was it sustainable for developers? How would it affect the future of game ownership? Now, coming up on the service’s fourth anniversary, public perception has cleared, and the verdict is near-universal: Xbox Game Pass has been heralded as a cost-effective, accessible alternative to traditional game purchasing for many players. As Sony takes a bigger step into offering its own subscriptions with its “all- new PlayStation Plus ” and Nintendo has tried its own hand at a similar service with some of the benefits of Nintendo Switch Online, we’re taking a look back at how Xbox Game Pass has evolved since its inception, from an unproven concept to the backbone of Microso...

Sonic Director Would Like To Make a Super Smash Bros Movie

Sonic movie director Jeff Fowler has said he would be interested in working on a Super Smash Bros. film adaptation but admits there would be a few legal hurdles to overcome. In an interview with ComicBook.com , Fowler was asked if he would ever like to helm a big-screen adaptation of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, having just come off the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie, which he directed following the first installment in 2020 . He indicated that he was open to the idea of a crossover, though there would be a few logistics to consider. "Nothing would make me happier than to just throw all the characters into a battle royale and do a big Smash Bros. thing. That would probably require some work from the lawyers before that could happen," Fowler said, contemplating what it would involve. "Getting Mario and Sonic in the ring, I mean everyone would be kinda dying for that, right? That's just classic." As the outlet notes, Sega owns all of the characters from the...

A Call of Duty: Warzone Player Has Glitched Their Way Into Rebirth Island's Golden Vault

A Call of Duty: Warzone player has glitched their way into Rebirth Island's Golden Vault. The mysterious vault was added during the Season Two Reloaded update in March and teased to be opened soon, but one impatient player has now managed to force their way in. As reported by DualShockers , Twitter user @BobNetworkUK uploaded a video of the glitch (below), showing another player essentially push them through the vault door with a jeep. Got into the vault pic.twitter.com/tKvWm6vmAA — ExoNetwork (@BobNetworkUK) April 8, 2022 The vault appears to be fully functional apart from its locked doors, as it's full of loot chests that open as normal. The weapons dropped are useless, however, as there's no way to glitch back out into the main map. The previously mysterious doors were due to be unlocked soon as Infinity Ward had listed the "Golden Vaults Mystery" as a reward in its current Rebirth Reinforced event. Rebirth Island, the smaller Warzone map, receiv...

Halo Infinite Season 2 Will Add New Maps, Modes, And Events Next Month

Halo Infinite Season 2 will add new maps, modes, and events when it launches on May 3. Announced with a trailer on the game's official Twitter page , Season 2 is titled Lone Wolves and promises several new additions to the multiplayer portion of Halo Infinite. "Gear up for Season 2 of Halo Infinite," the post said. "Experience fresh content, including new maps, modes, themed limited-time events, and an all new Battle Pass that never expires." While the trailer doesn't give too much away, developer 343 Industries has previously said the new Battle Pass will allow players to earn credits to spend in the in-game shop on items, cosmetics, and even the next Battle Pass. Season 2 is also expected to fix the lack of content that has the community "simply out of patience" , 343 Industries said last week. Community director Brian Jarrard posted on Reddit : "We understand the community is simply out of patience and frankly, I think understandabl...

Players Discover How To Make One of Elden Ring’s Toughest Bosses Defeat Himself

Elden Ring players have discovered a quick and easy way to defeat Starscourge Radahn, one of the game's toughest bosses. The famed Red Lion seemingly shares the fear of most cats as drawing him towards the water in his boss arena causes Radahn to defeat himself. As reported by PC Gamer, the method was shared at similar times by both Reddit user HomeGrownCrown7 and Twitter user izuoku_ (below). It's a strategy that, while 'cheesy', still requires some skill as players need to first bring Radahn's health bar down to 50% before the instant kill method can be used. pic.twitter.com/8MvzmDNjgk — いずおく。/九十四 杏🍆🦇 (@izuoku_) April 7, 2022 This prompts the boss to enter his second stage which starts with a massive attack where Radahn leaps into the air before shooting back down in the form of a comet. By luring him towards the water before this attack, however, Radahn's comet form will land in the ocean, only to splash, sink, and die. Like previous FromSoftw...

Sea of Thieves Is Getting a New Randomised Pirate Lord Adventure

Sea of Thieves is getting a partially randomised three-part quest called Legend of the Veil. The update arrives on April 21 and aims to combine a well put together, cinematic story with the "anything can happen" appeal of regular gameplay. While the third chapter of Legends of the Veil is unchanging, the first two sections will have randomly generated quests with both combat and puzzle-solving objectives. The mission starts as the Pirate Lord appears on-board, asking the player to collect three Veil Stones to place in the Veil Mask, each located behind their own mini-adventure. Chapters one and two may take players to underwater shipwrecks and haunted islands, while the final chapter has them chase a tornado across the map while defending themselves from waves of ghost ships. The Athena level cap is also being raised from 20 to 30 when Legends of the Veil is released in a few weeks, and Rare is also adding new Ancients-themed cosmetics including a new ship set and wea...

Metroid Dread Has a New Boss Rush Mode

A free update for Metroid Dread had added Boss Rush and other new modes, Nintendo has announced . Players can take on bosses one after another in Boss Rush and, while missiles will be replenished after each battle, any damage taken will continue into the next fight. Beating a boss will upgrade Samus's abilities though, adding to the player's maximum missiles, Energy Tank, and Power Bombs. Survival Rush has also been added, a mode similar to Boss Rush but instead of fighting a set number of enemies the player has limited amount of time to defeat as many as possible. Neither missiles nor health replenish between fights but players are rewarded with more time for beating a boss, with a bonus for doing so without taking damage. For those seeking a challenge, the one-hit kill Dread Mode is getting its own version of Boss Rush, where players must tackle 12 bosses in a row without taking a single hit. This will, of course, require some serious skill, so Nintendo has added a P...

MLB The Show 22 Review

There’s a limit to how much development can happen on a game in a single year, and MLB The Show 22 is the perfect example of what hitting that wall can look like. This year’s entry into Sony San Diego’s annualized baseball series plays as well as ever and looks great, but the confines imposed by its rigid release schedule are also more apparent than ever. A new cooperative mode is a welcome addition and an already solid stadium builder has been expanded upon nicely, but technical issues are more persistent than previous editions too. MLB The Show 22 is still a really good baseball game – it’s just beginning to show signs that it may be time to call in a reliever. The lifelike recreation of Major League broadcasts in MLB The Show 22 is just as impressive as last year. There’s a cinematic quality to the way player-controlled action is framed, with intros, outros, overlay graphics, and the deep pool of stats that baseball fans expect. The lovingly detailed recreations of real world bal...

Cyberpunk 2077 just got a pretty significant update in February , and plenty of us took the time to jump back into Night City and take on a few more gigs. Whatever your opinion is on ...

Remedy and Rockstar Games Announce Max Payne 1 and 2 Remake for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X

Remedy and Rockstar Games have announced they will be remaking Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. In a surprise announcement Remedy will work with Rockstar under a new publishing agreement to remake the first two Max Payne games for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. Remedy will handle development while Rockstar will finance the project "which will be in line with a typical Remedy AAA-game production." The Max Payne remakes will also be developed on Remedy's Northlight game engine, the same engine used to develop Control and the upcoming Alan Wake 2. The original Max Payne games were also a result of a partnership between Remedy and Rockstar, with Remedy handling development and Rockstar Games publishing. Rockstar also handled the development of Max Payne 3. "We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games," said Rockstar founder Sam Houser. "We are massive fans...

Horizon Forbidden West Quietly Added a Toggle to Turn Off Pickup Animations

Players can now instantly pick up resources in Horizon: Forbidden West, fixing a point of irritation for some players. As reported by Eurogamer , the feature ppears to have arrived in the latest update but was missing from developer Guerrilla Games' patch notes. When turned on, it means players don't have to wait for an animation to play out whenever they wish to harvest enemy drops and other useful items in the open world. This also applies to when Aloy's mounted. Instant pick-up can be turned on and off in the pause menu, and makes exploration in the Forbidden West a little smoother. Many players had found having to wait for an animation every time an item was picked up a point of frustration, not least because you can find yourself doing it a dozen times after a single fight. Guerrilla has released several updates for the game since it launched in February, most of which have included bug fixes and minor quality of life improvements such as the automatic pickup op...

How the Guardians of the Galaxy Game's Cast Created Characters That Stood Apart from the MCU

Acting for Eidos Montreal’s Guardians of the Galaxy came with an almost unique challenge. Not only were the core cast members tasked with bringing digital avatars to life, they had to differentiate them from some of the most famous onscreen characters of the last decade. Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket, and Groot – they’re all now major pop culture names thanks to their MCU counterparts, not to mention decades of comic book appearances. But this isn’t an MCU game, nor a straight comic adaptation. Not in the slightest. We spoke to all five lead cast members for Guardians of the Galaxy to work out how they managed the balancing act of presenting players with new versions of beloved, familiar characters. “We were told very early on that [the developers] did not want it to be the comic books, they did not want it to be the MCU versions of the characters,” said Jon McLaren, who plays Starlord. “They wanted us to take risks, try things and really push to make these charac...
