Weird West Review
In this alternate universe, the West was won by trying a bunch of ideas so crazy they just might work… and if they don’t, hitting the quick-load button to revert to an earlier save and trying something even crazier until you pull it off. Thanks to that freedom to experiment with its world as you explore, Weird West is one of those games that feels like a stealth and combat playground even as it tells five mostly serious, well-written stories with interesting decisions throughout and a thoughtful conclusion. And with so much ground to cover and replayability to investigate, it’s well worth putting up with some quirks and underwhelming loot. What ties Weird West’s plot together is a group of shadowy figures using a magical brand to force your character’s consciousness into the bodies of various unsuspecting people. It’s a clever play on the way so many games have us take control of a character who already exists in that world but still need to bring us up to speed on their identity: h...
Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader – How Did it Take This Long to Get a Warhammer CRPG?
It’s truly bizarre that across the nearly 30 years of Warhammer video games, we haven’t had a single one that attempted to channel the tabletop Warhammer experience by utilizing the genre that feels best suited to do so: CRPGs. But that’s all about to change, as Pathfinder developer Owlcats has been cooking up something to fill this void. During an extensive hands-off demo of Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, I checked out its extremely chunky turn-based combat system, drowned in its plethora of dialogue options and social skill checks, and nodded approvingly at its lovingly faithful depiction of Warhammer’s morbid universe. While it’s still very early, so far this CRPG is shaping up to be everything I’ve wanted from a Warhammer video game. If you’ve ever played (or even glanced at) a game of Warhammer 40K, then you probably know it’s designed for a hyper-specific kind of nerd who loves calculations, large-scale drama, and an incredibly detailed world one could easily get lost in. Warham...

Outriders Crossplay is Now Fully Functional Across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC

Outriders has confirmed that crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox, and PC is once again fully functional, and it has also confirmed that it is hard at work on resolving the inventory wiping bug that is plaguing many players and that a restoration event in the near future is set to bring back what was lost. Crossplay was turned off during Outriders' rocky launch, but the latest patch that has now been deployed to all platforms will now allow friends to play together no matter where they choose to play. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/09/outriders-review-in-progress"] As for the inventory wipe bug, this patch was supposed to greatly reduce its occurrence, but it appears that it actually caused an increase in reports. Square Enix shared a note on Reddit, confirming that the team is "investigating it urgently," and that it is planning a one-off mass restoration that will bring back most of the lost gear. While no date was given, it is hoping to t...
Epic Is Losing Hundreds of Millions As it Battles Steam

Epic is set to lose at least $330 million in its battle to gain market share from Steam, mainly due to it offering exclusive games and free titles on its Epic Games Store. As reported by PC Gamer, Epic's legal fight with Apple has given us insight into how much Epic is spending to build up the Epic Games Store, including that it committed around $444 million to exclusivity deals in 2020 alone. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/13/fortnite-1984-apple-parody-video-short"] This money was spent on "minimum guarantees" for games that are exclusive to the Epic Games Store for a year. Since these games will not appear on Steam, Epic is offering these guarantees as advances to publishers whether or not their games sell enough to cover it. For example, Epic paid 505 Games $10.45 million for Control exclusivity back in 2019. In Epic's end-of-year report, Epic confirmed that players spent $700 million on the Epic Games Store in 2020, but these third-...
Age of Empires 4's First Civilizations, Campaign, and Gameplay Details Revealed

Age of Empires 4 details have been hard to come by since it was first announced in 2019, but no more, as we finally got a proper look at what Relic and Microsoft have been working on all this time. From documentary-style historical campaigns to the series' first nomadic faction, it's clear a lot of care has gone into preserving the Age of Empires experience while modernizing the experience. Though coming from Relic, a developer best known for mixing up the RTS genre with classics like Homeworld and Company of Heroes, Age of Empires 4 is shaping up to be much more of a classic Age game than anything else. You have a base where you gather resources like wood and stone, train armies of around 200 units (though the campaign will sometimes let you exceed this), and send them out to conquer your enemies. Each peasant or cavalryman presents a stylized spin on history, with strong silhouettes and bright, easy-to-read colors. The camera stays at a pretty safe distance by default, and th...

PlayStation’s Focus on Too Big to Fail Games Is Concerning

Sony’s consistent output of critical and commercial smash hits is undoubtedly a key factor in PlayStation’s rise from the ashes after the troubled launch of the PlayStation 3. By doubling down on beloved franchises like Uncharted, a revived God of War, and more recent hits like Marvel’s Spider-Man and Ghost of Tsushima, Sony’s stable of first-party studios has become synonymous with chart-topping, award-winning games. But a new report from Bloomberg suggests that Sony’s upper management primary focus on blockbuster games that are ‘too big to fail’ comes at the expense of riskier, more inventive projects. If the picture painted is an accurate one, Sony may be losing a key facet of its identity that’s not only been a hallmark of the company since its earliest days, but is also directly responsible for some of PlayStation’s biggest hits over time. While Diablo 2 was a defining game of my middle school and high school days – one that I would stay up entirely too late playing and get yelled at by my parents telling me to go to sleep – it’s also a game that I haven’t touched in almost 20 years. So my first hours with Diablo 2 Resurrected was a good reminder of three things: Diablo 2’s music kicks ass It’s still by far the best in the series when it comes to atmosphere and tone It’s old as hell That third point is especially notable because Diablo 2 Resurrected has received a wonderful fresh coat of paint that modernizes its visuals without ever losing that essential dreary atmosphere, painting the picture of a Diablo 2 as it would appear in the most rose tinted of memories. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/08/the-first-16-minutes-of-diablo-2-resurrected-gameplay-technical-alpha-4k-60fps"] But it also means that, for both better and for worse, Diablo 2 Resurrected still plays exactly as it di...

Last night, LGBTQ media advocacy organization GLAAD hosted its 32nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards, where The Last of Us Part 2 and Tell Me Why tied to receive the honor for Outstanding Video Game. The Outstanding Video Game category was added in 2018, and has previously been awarded to The Elder Scrolls Online: Summerset and The Outer Worlds. The award is intended to honor LGBTQ inclusion and fair, accurate representation in gaming. Dontnod's Tell Me Why was honored for its depiction of Tyler , a transgender man who returns to his hometown with his twin sister to revisit their complex shared family history. Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part 2 was celebrated for Ellie and Dina , two women depicted in a complex, emotional, and often tender relationship throughout the game, and Lev, a transgender young man whose storyline focuses heavily on his identity and whose depiction has been both celebrated and criticized by the trans community. Outriders Review in Progress

After playing roughly 30 hours of Outriders on PS5, I’ve hit the level cap with my main character and rolled credits on its campaign. Server issues in the first few days delayed that a bit, and there’s a hefty chunk of post-credits content before I reach the final final boss, but I wanted to give you my thoughts on its main campaign now instead of sitting on it until next week. So far, Outriders definitely delivers great sci-fi and superpower-focused action, some cool world design, and a pretty satisfying loot grind. But its occasionally clunky interface, some nasty persistent bugs, and messy story make it seem less like a big-budget science-fiction epic and more like a guilty pleasure Sy-Fy Channel™ original series. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, of course - sure, SyFy might be responsible for Defiance and Hunters , but it also gave us modern classics like Battlestar Galactica and... The Expanse is pretty good, too! (It had to be saved from cancelation by Amazon , but t...

When asked what he thought about crunch, Abrak said, "I took over as executive producer on [Kayne and Lynch] just two years before it was launched, and at that point the technology was just barely done. It was nowhere. Although it had been on the way for five years, it didn't really have any core features in place yet. That production was absolutely... it was crazy. Resident Evil Village Map and Mother Miranda Art Revealed

Considering the game’s title, it might not come as a surprise that portraying a village with a real sense of place was one of the main goals for Resident Evil Village’s developers. In a previous interview , director Morimasa Sato explained how the team implemented a village as the game’s central theme, and how they created different areas, characters and experiences with that theme in mind. Footage from the trailers shows a lonely village tucked away high in the mountains with architecture reminiscent of Northern European styles. But specific details remain a mystery, covered deep under the village’s snowy landscapes. Today, IGN can exclusively reveal the game’s map, which teases a wide array of locations within the village for the first time. Four locations are highlighted by emblems, of which one reads Castle Dimitrescu, the location of the PS5 exclusive Maiden demo. Other landmarks include a factory, windmills, and a reservoir which houses an image of a giant monster. The latter l...

Hello Games' The Last Campfire has received a surprise update. The studio has said that while The Last Campfire "isn't a live service game like No Man's Sky," the team wanted to implement some larger features so they could "move on from this game they care so much about." Hello Games has added 20% more puzzles to the game, as well as the ability to replay any puzzle at any time. This arrives alongside a host of performance improvements, controller and Mac support, a higher framerate cap and several quality-of-life improvements. A lot of the features added had been requested by fans. Sony studios are reportedly working on a remake of The Last of Us, while Sony Bend begins work on a new game after an unsuccessful 2019 pitch to make Days Gone 2. In a new Bloomberg report into dissatisfaction among Sony's lesser-known studios, sources say that a Last of Us remake codenamed T1X was started by Michael Mumbauer, the founder of Visual Arts Service Group (a Sony developer that traditionally assists development on PlayStation Studios' games). Mumbauer apparently assembled a new, 30-strong development group and – after passing on the idea of a remake of the first Uncharted game – settled on a remake of 2013's The Last of Us. However, the team reportedly ran into trouble after Sony kept their existence a secret, and refused to offer extra budget. Head of PlayStation Studios Herman Hulst apparently deemed the project too expensive, and Mumbauer's team was moved to support development of The Last of Us 2. Path of Exile 2 Preview: Better Bosses, New Skill Gems, and More

Standing atop a rolling, gothic mini-city dragged through bleak deserts by bizarre beasts of burden, Path of Exile 2's second act immediately looks like the kind of foreboding, imaginative action RPG adventure I expect from Grinding Gear Games. And that's not just because of the enhanced graphics compared to its predecessor, with new lighting effects that really pop and set the tone for anything from a scorched sand dune to a properly dreadful dungeon. It's a nightmarish, gore-soaked, yet oddly beautiful and distinct world that I'm eager to sink my sabatons into. Much like the original Path of Exile , the sequel will start you off as a half-naked wretch sentenced to doom, making your way up from the very, very bottom ranks of the world of Wraeclast. Considering how cosmically over-the-top things got and how many gods we killed in the previous game, the developers very deliberately aimed for this kind of reset. They want Path of Exile 2, which was first announced back in...

After a launch filled with server issues, the developers of Outriders are awarding any player who tried the game in its first two weeks a Community Appreciation Package. The developers say they're still working on the package, but the plan is to make the rewards available for anyone who played Outriders between March 31 and April 11. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=outriders-ign-first&captions=true"] The gift includes a Legendary Weapon and an amount of Titanium that matches the player's highest leveled character. In addition, players will receive the "Frustration" emote. The emote may match some emotions players felt during the game's launch, but the developers say the irony is fitting, but not intentional. Outriders servers had to be taken down last weekend so the developers could, "bring it back into a healthy and stable state." The team also noted it is working on a long-term fix, rather than...
