Weird West Review
In this alternate universe, the West was won by trying a bunch of ideas so crazy they just might work… and if they don’t, hitting the quick-load button to revert to an earlier save and trying something even crazier until you pull it off. Thanks to that freedom to experiment with its world as you explore, Weird West is one of those games that feels like a stealth and combat playground even as it tells five mostly serious, well-written stories with interesting decisions throughout and a thoughtful conclusion. And with so much ground to cover and replayability to investigate, it’s well worth putting up with some quirks and underwhelming loot. What ties Weird West’s plot together is a group of shadowy figures using a magical brand to force your character’s consciousness into the bodies of various unsuspecting people. It’s a clever play on the way so many games have us take control of a character who already exists in that world but still need to bring us up to speed on their identity: h...
Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader – How Did it Take This Long to Get a Warhammer CRPG?
It’s truly bizarre that across the nearly 30 years of Warhammer video games, we haven’t had a single one that attempted to channel the tabletop Warhammer experience by utilizing the genre that feels best suited to do so: CRPGs. But that’s all about to change, as Pathfinder developer Owlcats has been cooking up something to fill this void. During an extensive hands-off demo of Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, I checked out its extremely chunky turn-based combat system, drowned in its plethora of dialogue options and social skill checks, and nodded approvingly at its lovingly faithful depiction of Warhammer’s morbid universe. While it’s still very early, so far this CRPG is shaping up to be everything I’ve wanted from a Warhammer video game. If you’ve ever played (or even glanced at) a game of Warhammer 40K, then you probably know it’s designed for a hyper-specific kind of nerd who loves calculations, large-scale drama, and an incredibly detailed world one could easily get lost in. Warham...

The world of One Piece is coming to Netflix as a live-action adaptation of the much-beloved manga. We recently got our first look at some of the extended cast of the series, along with concept art and sets from the show . From Monkey D. Luffy to Red Hair to Alvida and beyond, the cast of the show looks to be massive. So whether you’re an established fan or discovering One Piece for the first time, here’s everything you need to know about the cast and characters of the Netflix show. Netflix’s One Piece Cast Inaki Godoy stars as Monkey D. Luffy , showing a great range of enthusiasm and energy in the behind-the-scenes footage Netflix has released. For those new to the series, Luffy’s journey begins after being accidentally turned into a rubber man by eating a magical Devil Fruit, granting him the power to stretch his body but cursing him with the inability to swim (a situation we’ve all found ourselves in, I’m sure). He’s a powerful fighter with an insatiable appetite for meat and a...

The Street Fighter Twitter account has been generous to fans of the series, though, with glimpses at features like character-specific taunts and in-game emotes . There’s been a steady stream of reveals for the game outside of Twitter, too. Just yesterday at the Summer Game Fest, we got another look a...

Beyond simply being one of the best gaming controllers, the Sony DualSense is also one of the best PC controllers . It has the ergonomics and grip to let you go ham for hours on end, and it’s crammed with some of the most meaningful innovations in gamepads since the contentious Steam Controller . But, getting the DualSense working on a gaming PC may seem like a fool’s errand — it’s made for the PlayStation 5 after all, right? Fortunately, PC support for the DualSense is a lot more robust than it was for the DualShock 4 controller just a generation prior. It can be as simple as plug-and-play or just a quick Bluetooth pairing to get started. Items needed to pair PS5 controller with PC: Data-ready USB-C cable Bluetooth adapter for PC Where things might get a little tricky is ensuring you’ve actually got the means of linking your DualSense controller and your PC. The DualSense doesn’t come with a USB cable when you buy it as a standalone controller, and not every PC has Bluetoo...

The 2004 hit RPG Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance II is getting an updated re-release this summer. The game, from Publisher Interplay Entertainment and developer Black Isle Studios, will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. The game will not be a remake, but it will feature enhanced graphics and up to 4K resolution on supported platforms. If you want to play with friends, you’ll be able to play co-op locally across all versions. On the Steam version, you’ll also be able to use Remote Play for a long-distance cooperative experience. And yes, it’s fully verified on the Steam Deck for an on-the-go, handheld RPG experience. The original game was released in 2004 on PS2 and Xbox, three years after the first. In our review we gave it an 8.4 out of 10. We said “this game is easy to pick up, easy to play, and a great excuse for wading through legions of monsters by yourself or with a friend.” This updated version, like the original, will inc...

At the end of Day of the Devs today, Annapurna snuck in with the surprise announcement of its second annual showcase, just like it did last year. It will take place on July 28, 2022, at 12 pm PT / 3pm EDT / 8pm BST. As for what games we might see this time around, we can make some guesses. Right now, Annapurna has a number of games in the works for this year including Hindsight and Neon White (Stray will release before the showcase happens). Annapurna also has Skin Deep, Storyteller, and Thirsty Suitors queued up beyond 2022, so we might expect some firmer dates on those games, or at least more gameplay. Last year's showcase was fairly stacked, packing over 15 game teases and announcements into just half an hour. It included a release window for Stray, an expansion announcement for The Outer Wilds, and tons more. Scanning through last year's roster might offer some further clues as to what's coming this time around. Maybe we'll finally see what Ivy Road is workin...

Day of the Devs just wrapped up, leaving us with a heck of a lineup of fascinating indie games slated for the coming months and years. We saw a total of 16 games over the last hour, some of them from known indie studios such as the folks behind Monument Valley, and others the debut games from new studios. We’ve got a roundup below of everything we just saw, so if you’re looking for the next indie darling to fall in love with, this is the place to check: Time Flies The newly-announced Time Flies explores the limited time we all have here on earth, from the perspective of a fly. The time the fly has to live is dependent on where you are in the world, converting years to seconds – so if life expectancy in the United States is about 77 years, players in the US will have 77 seconds to live. During that time, you can try to complete items on a bucket list (similar to Untitled Goose Game’s To Do list) such as “Learn an Instrument,” “Go on Tour,” or “Get Rich.” Time Flies is made by Mich...

Xbox's game streaming services have so far been limited to titles inside the Xbox Game Pass line-up – but that will change later this year. No release date has been announced as yet, but Xbox says that Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will soon gain the ability to stream select games they own, even if they're not part of Game Pass. No specific titles have been announced as yet, nor has Xbox explained if the intent is to make all games playable through streaming as well as disc/download. It appears no such option is coming for game owners that are not subscribers to Game Pass Ultimate. Speaking in a briefing for media, CVP of Gaming Experiences & Platforms, Ashley McKissick said, "Gamers are not shy with their feedback, which is awesome. And so one of the things that they told us, it's like, 'Hey, we would love to be able to stream games that we own even if they're not in the Game Pass catalog.' "And so later this year if you are an Xbox Game...
Microsoft's Activision Bizzard Acquisition: Execs Discuss Exclusives and Game Pass

Microsoft has discussed its plans for Activision Blizzard's games after its intended acquisition of the gaming giant, from how it won't make multi-platform games exclusive, to its plans for putting titles into Game Pass. Speaking during a briefing for media, Head of Xbox Game Studios, Matt Booty addressed the issue of exclusives, and tried to put fans' minds at ease about existing multiplatform games they might love outside of Xbox: "If we acquire a game that comes with a big community across a number of platforms," Booty began, "the last thing we want to do is take something away. If anything, we feel that it's our job to be caretakers, to be shepherds, to continue to build and nurture that community, not to cut it up into pieces and try to take some of it away." This appears to be Microsoft's philosophy for existing games, and perhaps series, given we've heard that Xbox will release multiple new Call of Duty games as multiplatform titl...

As part of Ghostbusters Day celebrations, Sony Pictures VR announced today that its upcoming title Ghostbusters VR will be coming to the PlayStation VR2 . Ghostbusters VR was announced last April during the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, where it was first announced to be coming to the Quest 2. nDreams, the studio behind Far Cry VR: Dive Into Insanity and Phantom: Covert Opps, is developing Ghostbusters VR. Set in San Francisco, players will have the opportunity to run their own ghost-busting business. Sony Picture VR previously confirmed that the game is set "in modern day and maybe slightly in the future," but the game is not a direct follow-up to any of the Ghostbusters movies , including Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Ghostbusters VR is the latest game to be announced for Sony's forthcoming gaming headset, the PlayStation VR2. Last week Sony had a roughly 30-minute State of Play where several games were confirmed to be in development for the headset, including VR suppor...

The campaign for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, as I learned in a recent visit to Infinity Ward to get a first look at the sequel to the successful 2019 reboot, brings back some characters from the last game, but also brings back some familiar characters from Modern Warfare’s past. We’ll see Captain John Price, Sergeant Kyle “Gaz” Garrick, Lieutenant Simon “Ghost” Riley, Sergeant John “Soap” Mctavish, CIA Station Chief Kate Laswell return. And Modern Warfare 2 is bringing back a faction called Shadow Company that’s been reworked for this modern title. Commander Phillip Graves owns Shadow Company and it operates as a private military contractor. A newcomer to Modern Warfare 2’s story is Alejandra Vargas, a member of the Mexican special forces. The campaign revolves around a US airstrike killing a hostile foreign general, and revenge is enacted and Taskforce 141 and the Mexican Special Forces must work together to defeat the enemy. From what was presented in the campaign showcase (do...
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer - First Impressions

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer seems to be bringing back the core makeup of Call of Duty games. Modern Warfare 2 is bringing back the best parts of the 2019 remake and adding more to that. Here are my impressions on Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer from my preview time at Infinity Ward (you can also read my first impressions of the single-player campaign ). Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer seems just as good as the remake from 2019. This brings back all the core basics that were great about 2019’s and makes them better from that iteration. Gunsmith has been slightly reworked to be more grounded in modern military elements so now players can unlock “Platforms” that progress a gun’s evolution. So for example, the M4 Platform could lead to unlocking the M16 or the .45 SOCOM. So really, the platforms are a “family” of guns that span the different categories, like the Assault Rifles, SMGs, LMGs, and so on. Like in Modern Warfare 2’s campaign, multiplayer will feature the new a...
