Weird West Review
In this alternate universe, the West was won by trying a bunch of ideas so crazy they just might work… and if they don’t, hitting the quick-load button to revert to an earlier save and trying something even crazier until you pull it off. Thanks to that freedom to experiment with its world as you explore, Weird West is one of those games that feels like a stealth and combat playground even as it tells five mostly serious, well-written stories with interesting decisions throughout and a thoughtful conclusion. And with so much ground to cover and replayability to investigate, it’s well worth putting up with some quirks and underwhelming loot. What ties Weird West’s plot together is a group of shadowy figures using a magical brand to force your character’s consciousness into the bodies of various unsuspecting people. It’s a clever play on the way so many games have us take control of a character who already exists in that world but still need to bring us up to speed on their identity: h...
Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader – How Did it Take This Long to Get a Warhammer CRPG?
It’s truly bizarre that across the nearly 30 years of Warhammer video games, we haven’t had a single one that attempted to channel the tabletop Warhammer experience by utilizing the genre that feels best suited to do so: CRPGs. But that’s all about to change, as Pathfinder developer Owlcats has been cooking up something to fill this void. During an extensive hands-off demo of Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, I checked out its extremely chunky turn-based combat system, drowned in its plethora of dialogue options and social skill checks, and nodded approvingly at its lovingly faithful depiction of Warhammer’s morbid universe. While it’s still very early, so far this CRPG is shaping up to be everything I’ve wanted from a Warhammer video game. If you’ve ever played (or even glanced at) a game of Warhammer 40K, then you probably know it’s designed for a hyper-specific kind of nerd who loves calculations, large-scale drama, and an incredibly detailed world one could easily get lost in. Warham...
The Games Industry on the Best Games of the Last Decade

Just over a decade ago, IGN ran two roundtable features; one that asked a broad panel of industry insiders to look back at the decade leading up to 2010 and one that charged them with prognosticating on what they thought gaming would be like in 2020 . We recently revisited their 2020 predictions to see what the panel got right, what they got wrong, and what they were blindsided by – and the results were pretty interesting. Turns out a lot has changed in only ten years . We’ve now pulled together a new panel of more than 30 industry veterans to recreate the same concept, starting out with a look back at the last decade. In a previous feature , our participants told us what they think have been the most important changes in the games industry , and now we’re moving on to the best games and most memorable experiences. Please note that we haven’t included all responses, and some responses have been edited for length. [poilib element="accentDivider"] In the first part of this fe...
Dauntless Is Getting Shadowy New Threats in Call of the Void Update

I was a total rookie in the monster-slaying, co-op action RPG Dauntless when the developer guiding me through a preview of the upcoming Call of the Void update told me we were about to jump into some “mid- to late-game content.” That felt a bit like being woken up on a Saturday morning and hearing there’s a bear outside and I need to deal with it. But decked out with an absurdly oversized hammer and some stylish plague doctor armor, there wasn’t much to do but take a deep breath and plunge into the unknown. A typical hunt in Dauntless usually focuses on a single boss (called a behemoth) at a time. But Escalation missions, like the new Call of the Void we were about to take on, feature a gauntlet of multiple fights in a row. And each fight can feature a randomized pairing of two different bosses that may play off of each other in ways the developers never even considered. We were unlucky enough to come up against a Shrike and a Skraev in the same room – two great-tasting, winged death b...
EA Sports Takes Stronger Stance Against Racist Usernames, Especially in NHL Games

EA Sports has announced that it will take a more active stance against racism in its various sports titles, particularly in the EA NHL series. EA was one of many game companies to come out in support of the Black community this week but some viewed the company’s statement as being hypocritical. This is because of the rampant racism present in its sports games, particularly the NHL series. The r/EA_NHL subreddit has been filled with users highlighting instances of racist usernames that appear to have only grown in numbers these past weeks. Especially concerning are the racist usernames that directly reference the death of George Floyd. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-ign-nhl-review-ever&captions=true"] “ NHL 20 might be one of the most racist communities I’ve ever been apart of,” wrote one Reddit user in a now-locked thread published almost a month ago. The user reported facing off against user-created teams with blatantl...
Valorant Review

Nail-biting bomb plants, hip fire headshots, and hypernatural flicks of the wrist are the tenets of Valorant. This 5v5 tactical hero shooter by League of Legends developer Riot Games had a stranglehold on me from my first carefully strategized victory. Now, after clocking 90 hours between the closed beta and the full release, I'm still utterly enamored with the brilliant implementation of its superpowered cast and stellar gunplay. The learning curve is steep, but once the cogs of mastery clicked together, it became damn near impossible for me to put Valorant down. If you've ever indulged in a little Counter-Strike (or, in my case, a lot) at some point over the past two decades, Valorant's high-stakes round-based shootouts will be immediately familiar. Teams take turns as either the attackers or defenders in a best-of-25 rounds. Attackers carry the spike (a bomb) to one of several designated bombsites on Valorant’s 3 finely tuned maps, plant that sucker, and hopefully blow ...
The Elder Scrolls Online: Greymoor Review

By the time December rolls around, a full decade will have passed since Bethesda first awed us with the announcement of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which is considered one of the greatest sandbox RPGs of all time (if not for its depth or its main quest, then for the openness and flexibility of its world). The Elder Scrolls Online returns again to that frosty, Viking-esque province with its new Greymoor expansion, and it's... just fine. Its quests and setting are appetizing enough if you like your Nordic-themed fantasy served with a gooey side of vampires, but I never shook the feeling that ZeniMax Online's latest dish left the kitchen a tad too early. Greymoor is certainly beautiful, to its credit. It's set in Skyrim's dreary, marshy northwestern corner, which nevertheless manages to show how far ESO’s graphics have come since we saw the eastern half of the region at launch back in 2014. The centerpiece is Solitude, a city that extends over a rocky arch and makes a go...

Blizzard says that now is not the right time for the event and will announce more details at a later date. More important voices than ours need to be heard, and now is the time to listen. We are postponing our upcoming World of Warcraft: Shadowlands livestream planned for June 9, and will share more details about the expansion in the future. — World of Warcraft (@Warcraft) June 5, 2020 Blizzard had previously announced that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will not be hosting a physical BlizzCon event this year . While the company said that a digital alternative is being planned for early 2021, the company also announced a livestream event to detail more of its upcoming World of Warcraft: shadowland expansion. The original event would feature executive producer John Hight and game director Ion Hazzikostas as they provide a new look into WoW'...

Riot Games said Valorant is being prototyped for consoles but that this doesn't necessarily mean the game is coming to consoles. Valorant was released on PC on June 2 and already, its popularity has fans wondering about the game's current exclusivity to PC and whether or not the 5v5 tactical shooter will ever come to consoles. Valorant Executive Producer Anna Donlon answered this by saying that a console version of the game is currently being prototyped. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=gameplay-screenshots-of-valorant-closed-beta&captions=true"] "We are definitely prototyping that right now," Donlon said in an interview with GameSpot . "But there's a way to play this game and there's a way to experience this game that we're not entirely sure translates completely to console play." Donlon said the core of Valorant is the game's "strong level of competitive integrity" and that ...

In response to the global protests following the death of George Floyd, many games, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and NBA 2K20, have added in-game Black Lives Matter tributes. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, after delaying Modern Warfare, Warzone, and Call of Duty: Mobile's upcoming seasons and committing to ban racist names from its online modes, has added an update that prompts a Black Lives Matter message to each and every Modern Warfare player as they log on. The message reads "Black Lives Matter. Our community is hurting. The systemic inequalities our community experiences are once again center stage. Call of Duty and Infinity Ward stand for equality and inclusion. We stand against the racism and injustice our Black community enures. Until change happens and Black Lives Matter, we will never truly be the community we strive to be." As reported by Kotaku, NBA 2K20 has also chosen to use its platform for Black Lives Matter and is giving away three free shirt...
