Microsoft No Longer Selling 12-Month Xbox Live Gold Plans

Microsoft has officially stopped selling 12-Month Xbox Live Gold Plans, possibly hinting at a stronger focus on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or a new service that could be on the way in-time for the launch of Xbox Series X. Microsoft confirmed the change to TrueAchievements, stating that even though the 12-month plan is not being sold "at this time," the 3-month and 1-month plans are still available for purchase. "At this time, Xbox has decided to remove the 12 months Xbox Live Gold SKU from the Microsoft online Store." A Microsoft representative said. "Customers can still sign up for a one month or three month Xbox Live Gold subscription online through the Microsoft Store." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/16/everything-we-know-about-the-xbox-series-x"] Microsoft gave no further reason as to why it made this change, but earlier this week, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer announced that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members will automatically be

Metacritic Is Delaying User Reviews Until 36 Hours After a Game is Released

Metacritic, the popular review aggregating website, has decided to delay user reviews for new games until 36 hours after they've been released in a defense against "review bombing." As reported by GameSpot, this decision comes only a few weeks after the release of The Last of Us Part 2, which is one of the most recent examples of games targeted by negative reviews, many of which come only hours after a game is completed. Considering The Last of Us Part 2 can take 20-30 hours to complete, many early reviews were assuredly from those who had yet to finish it. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-best-reviewed-games-of-2020&captions=true"] "We recently implemented the 36 hour waiting period for all user reviews in our games section to ensure our gamers have time to play these games before writing their reviews," a Metacritic spokesperson said in a statement to GameSpot. Opinion: Watch Dogs Legion's 'Play as Anyone' Isn't Working for Me

After roughly four hours with Watch Dogs Legion , I can tell you that everything it adapts from previous games is great. It expands on your ability to easily hack almost everything at the touch of a button – the saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” comes to mind – and offers a big sandbox to experiment in. However, while the moment-to-moment gameplay loop seems to be solid so far , Legion’s big new “play as anyone” feature might not be as effective. The feature sounded tantalizing, but I‘m a bit worried that “play as no one” is probably a more accurate tagline. In the original Watch Dogs, you played as Aiden Pearce , a vigilante hacker out for revenge. In Watch Dogs 2, you were the more likable Marcus Holloway , hellbent on returning the freedom of privacy back to the people. These characters weren’t perfect, nor were their motivations, but you at least had shoes to fill and felt like a piece of the larger puzzle. Deathloop Devs on PS5 Features, Time Loop Gameplay

Revealed at E3 2019, Arkane’s next ambitious first-person adventure is the time-twisty Deathloop, which is now set to be released on PC and PS5 as a console exclusive this holiday. With a release so close, and the impressive first couple of showcases Arkane and publisher Bethesda have offered for it so far, we spoke to Deathloop Game Director Dinga Bakaba and Art Director Sebastien Mitton about the unique art style and its inspirations, how Deathloop’s time loop design works, and what it means to bring the game to the PS5. PS5: Preorders Won't Be a Surprise, Sony Says

Earlier this week, rumors began to swirl that the PlayStation 5 would go up for preorder, much to the surprise of, well, everyone, including Sony. In the wake of those rumors, PlayStation has promised that PS5 preorders won't catch players by surprise. Speaking to Geoff Keighley after a brief showcase of the PS5's DualSense controller, Worldwide Head of Marketing Eric Lempel said "I think it's safe to say...we'll let you know when preorder will happen. It's not going to happen with a minute's notice. We're going to at some point let you know when you can preorder PlayStation 5. The Last of Us Part 2 Had the Biggest First Month of Any 2020 Game in the US

The Last of Us Part 2 was June 2020's best selling game and has now become the 3rd best-selling game of the year, the 8th best-selling game of the twelve month period ending in June, and has the highest launch month dollar sales of any 2020 release to date in the US. As revealed by The NPD Group's Mat Piscatella, The Last of Us Part 2's first month sales have surpassed other games as Final Fantasy VII Remake, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Doom Eternal to claim the top spot. The Last of Us Part 2, which also became the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive with over 4 million copies sold in its first three days, only trails Marvel's Spider-Man for the biggest launch month for a Sony published game. Ghost of Tsushima Devs Lengthened Some Loading Times Because You Couldn't Read the Tips in Time

The developers behind Ghost of Tsushima had to lengthen some of the game's loading screens as Sucker Punch found that they were so fast, players couldn't read the tips. In an interview with Kotaku , Sucker Punch lead engine programmer Adrian Bentley noted that the team had to "artificially extend downtime" when the player died so that the loading screen tips could appear for "more than a fraction of a second.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/05/14/ghost-of-tsushima-gameplay-exploring-tsushima"] According to Bentley, this is down to Sucker Punch's engine loading strategy, which requires "as few disk reads as possible." "When you die, we only need [to] re-run this quick ‘spawn’ process with most of the data already loaded. In contrast, many other engines use serialization-based approaches, which require reloading a substantial amount of data to run again,” Bentley told Kotaku. Having played the game myself, the window bet

Twitch Blocks US Army From Sending Stream Viewers to Recruitment Page for Alleged Fake Giveaway

Twitch has blocked the U.S. Army from running controller giveaways after they were allegedly found to redirect viewers to a military recruitment page. A report from  The Nation  dug into how the US Military is using online gaming to recruit teens. The Nation found that viewers watching the Army's channel were being presented with chat prompts to "win an Xbox Elite Series 2 controller." But when clicking the link to enter the giveaway, users were supposedly met with "a recruiting form with no additional mention of a contest, odds, total number of winners, or when a drawing will occur." Paper Mario Devs Are No Longer Allowed to Make New Characters That 'Touch on the Mario Universe'

The developers of Paper Mario have revealed that they are no longer allowed to make characters "that touch on the Mario universe," or modify existing Mario characters. In an interview with VGC , Nintendo veteran Kensuke Tanabe was asked about the process behind designing new villains for a franchise full of iconic antagonists like Bowser and Kamek. In response, Tanabe noted that "since Paper Mario: Sticker Star, it's no longer possible to modify Mario characters or to create original characters that touch on the Mario Universe." This means that the team behind Paper Mario: Origami King had to come up with new characters from outside of the existing Mario Universe for the game, as they couldn't riff off of established Mushroom Kingdom villains. New characters seemingly can't even resemble Mario characters: "We need to create original characters with designs that don’t involve the Mario universe at all, like we’ve done with Olly and the stationery bos

Call Of Duty 2020: Alleged Alpha Listing Appears On Microsoft Store

A listing for an alleged alpha version of Call of Duty 2020 has appeared on the Microsoft Store. You can check out the listing for The Red Door here , a game listed as a "Shooter" created by Activision. The description for the game reads: "There is more than one truth. If you go looking for answers, be ready to question everything and accept that nothing will ever be the same. The Red Door awaits, do you dare step through it?" The game also has an approximate size of 81.65 GB, and is rated Mature. As noted by  VG247  we've seen The Red Door before, when it appeared on the PS4 Database website with a Content ID that contained the string "COD2020." It's not clear what exactly is going on here, but it could be Activision sharing in-development builds of the game, a practice that is common in the games industry - last month we saw  an early build of Gods and Monsters leak onto Google Stadia.  Call of Duty news account Modern Warzone tweeted today that

One-Third of Developers Say Their Games Were Delayed by COVID-19 According to GDC Survey

According to a survey of almost 2,500 game developers, one in three developers revealed that their games were delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic that has halted many industries as companies scrambled to shift to a work-from-home model. In a special Game Developers Conference (GDC) survey, 1 in 3 developers (33%) reported that the games they’re working on were delayed due to the pandemic. 70% of respondents also announced that they’ve begun working from home, while 27% were already working from home before the crisis. Halo 3 Has Added a New Skull, and It Lets You Fly

Halo 3 has finally arrived on PC, and 343 has added a new skull - the series' famous cheat/modifier items - to the game that lets players fly. And it's been added to Halo 1 and 2 as well. Once unlocked, in the pre-game menu alongside Grunt Birthday Party, I Would Have Been Your Daddy and other classics, you should now find Acrophobia, a modifier that lets players fly around campaign maps when they hold down the jump button. It's great for reaching Easter eggs and causing serious mischief - you can finally fly up and hijack those pesky Banshees with ease. Desolation will drop abandoned freighters across the game's galaxy - players can choose to breach their airlocks (alone or in co-op), and explore what waits inside. Microsoft Flight Simulator's Physical Edition Contains 10 Discs

The physical release of Microsoft Flight Simulator will arrive on 10 discs. In a forum post  from the official retail partner for Microsoft Flight Simulator, Aerosoft, administrator Mathijs Kok wrote that the physical edition will include "10 (!) double-layer DVD's and a printed manual in a spectacular box," to help usher fans into "the new age of flight simulation." Kok later clarified that the 10 discs contain roughly 90 GB of the game's "world and aircraft," which constitute the bulk of the game's assets, with the actual simulator code being "pretty small in size." This means that fans with a slower internet connection can install Microsoft Flight Simulator without downloading the files from Microsoft's servers. According to Kok, there is "no difference between boxed retail and the version MS sells directly." This is great news for the Microsoft Flight Simulator fans who don't have access to solid internet, but it

Ghost of Tsushima's Photo Mode Is the Best in Any Game Ever

Image
One of the most incredible features of Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima is its photo mode. Not only is it flexible and packed full of great options, , it's a snap to access: simply push Right on the D-pad and the action freezes, allowing you to line up that perfect shot. With the exception of some pre-rendered cutscenes, you can enter photo mode at any time. This functionality and ease of access let you capture incredible moments in the action, such as freezing a spray of blood mid-air as Jin's sword finds its mark. But it's also incredible for capturing landscapes, with a wide range of lens lengths and apertures available. Basically, if there's a type of photo you want to take, Ghost of Tsushima’s photo mode has an option for you. It is, in short, the best photo mode in a video game yet.
