From Tears of the Kingdom to Grand Theft Auto: How Open Worlds Set Us Free

Image
Since their inception, video games have acted as portals to other worlds. Unlike books and films, they allow us to not just be immersed in another land but to truly explore one. It’s that core fantasy that has seen the concept of the open world flourish; what better way is there to create a sense of discovering a new world than to build one with as much depth and as few borders as possible? That goal has seen the open world advance from a form of environment design to a whole diverse genre in its own right. Where linear game design delivers slices of another reality, the open world aims to simulate on a grander level. It combines geography, architecture, populations, and events to create a living city, region, or kingdom. The thing that truly separates open worlds from linear games, though, is freedom. For some developers this means offering a wide range of activities, buffet-style, to ensure you’re always free to play what you want. For others it’s providing the tools so that you ...

Open Roads Team Splits From Fullbright After 'Toxic' Workplace Allegations

The Open Roads Team is no longer a part of Fullbright after splitting with the company. According to Fullbright co-founder Steve Gaynor , the team — now known as The Open Roads Team — will continue to work with Annapurna Interactive, but is no longer connected to its former studio. “After a great deal of consideration, it's just no longer Fullbright's place to represent Open Roads publicly going forward,” he confirmed. “It will be credited to The Open Roads Team at launch." It’s been almost two years since Gaynor stepped down as creative lead on Open Roads following accusations of creating a “toxic work culture”. “I stepped away from the project,” he reflected. “Not much was shared about what we were working on. I did my best to reflect and reconsider how I worked with people and what the best role was for me. And now two years have passed.” His behavior reportedly led to 12 staff members exiting the studio, with women “repeatedly broken down by microaggression”...

Rumor: First Mortal Kombat 12 Info Leak Ahead of Impending Announcement

Following a tease from Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon, rumors around Mortal Kombat 12 have already started circulating ahead of any official announcement from Netherrealm Studios. Days ago, Boon posted a short video of a ticking clock on Twitter counting down to something, and that something is most certainly Mortal Kombat 12 . The clock almost reaches the 12th hour before an explosion rockets it ahead to land on "1." Today, another Twitter account associated with previous PSN leaks, @billbil_kun, alleges that the next grizzly fighter is titled Mortal Kombat 1, making that "1" in Boon's video seems a little more significant. As you may notice, game will be available for Next-Gen consoles only (while including Nintendo Switch) Comes in 3 editions: - Standard - Premium - Kollector's Edition (Physical only, not available for Nintendo Switch) Announcement should be close — billbil-kun (@billbil_kun) May 11, 2023 "Next Mortal Kombat game fr...

Witcher Spin-Off Project Sirius Has a 'New Framework' Following Development Restart

CD Projekt Red's Witcher spin-off game Project Sirius now has a "new framework" after development was reset earlier this year. As reported by Eurogamer , CD Projekt Red revealed in an announcement to investors that the development of Sirius is seemingly back on track after the studio decided to restart its development. CD Projekt Red "hereby announces the conclusion of work on defining a new framework for Project Sirius," it said. Being developed by CD Projekt Red-owned studio The Molasses Flood, Sirius is promised to be a multiplayer Witcher game built to appeal to audiences outside of just RPG fans. Concerns were raised when CD Projekt Red filed an impairment charge in March, something filed by a company to write off assets that have dropped in value or been lost completely, but the developer made clear that Sirius was merely being re-evaluated and not cancelled completely . CD Projekt Red told IGN at the time that it had filed the impairment change as ...

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom PSA: Here's How to Import Your Breath of the Wild Horses

As a sequel to Breath of the Wild, Tears of the kingdom of course has numerous connections to its predecessor from the world the game takes place in to its characters to its story. But it also has an extremely tangible connection: it reads your Breath of the Wild save data, and uses that data in Tears of the Kingdom for a feature that we're all surprisingly emotional about. WARNING: Spoilers for what this feature does begin below the video. Read at your own risk! Like Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom includes horses that you can seek out, tame, and ride around the fields of Hyrule. In fact, we have an in-depth guide to horsing around in our Wikis section. But one incredible feature of Tears of the Kingdom's horses is that the game will read your Breath of the Wild save data, and let Link import any horses he tamed in Breath of the Wild simply by visiting a stable. You'll need to have the save data downloaded to your current console for this to work, so if you ...

Should You Play Breath of the Wild Before Tears of the Kingdom?

Image
The Legend of Zelda timeline is fairly disconnected between games, meaning you don't necessarily have to play the previous entry in the series to enjoy the latest. That doesn't necessarily apply to Tears of the Kingdom, however, because the developers always planned on making it a Breath of the Wild sequel . So if you haven't already played Breath of the Wild and are wanting to dive right into what our Tears of the Kingdom review called a "A remarkable sequel that somehow raises the bar", you may want to slow your roll. While you can certainly play Tears of the Kingdom without playing Breath of the Wild and still enjoy yourself, you'd be missing out on one of the best Legend of Zelda games of all time. If you do want to skip to the latest Zelda game, though, the official story recap above should fill in the broader strokes. Otherwise, let's dive into some of the reasons you should for sure play BotW first. The Breath of the Wild Map Sets the Stage ...

Darkest Dungeon 2 Review

With the whole world dissolving into an apocalyptic, primordial abyss, your band of misfits sets out into a nightmarish land to save everything by destroying corrupted pieces of reality beneath an ancient mountain. They'll probably fail, taken down by ambush, infighting, bad luck – but maybe, just maybe, fortune favors them and they destroy some unspeakable horror… and then gear up for the next run. That's the routine in Darkest Dungeon 2, where I was never sure if I'd journey from desperate despair to delicious delight, or from frolicking fun to futile frustration, every time I booted it up. Enjoying it for the dozens of hours it demands to complete takes the spirit of a gambler, someone always willing to hold out hope that the dice will fall the way they want – and that the next run will be better than the last. Building on the turn-based combat of Darkest Dungeon, Red Hook Studios has made a brave decision: Darkest Dungeon 2 is simply not the same kind of game. Instea...

Jack Black's Infectious Video Game Song Features God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Yes, Mario

Jack Black has created yet another catchy song - and this time, it's a love letter to video games. Following up on his song "Peaches" for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, his band Tenacious D released "Video Games" with an accompanying music video that sports more game references than you can count on two hands. You can watch the full video here . It opens up with an animated version of Jack Black singing about how he doesn't play video games ( we all know that's not true ) with bandmate Kyle Gass playing guitar. As the video goes on, Black begins to name a bunch of video games he's played... while Gass gets killed by various video game creatures and characters. Throughout the song, he references God of War , Fallout 4 , Sonic the Hedgehog, Red Dead Redemption 2 , The Legend of Zelda, Street Fighter, Minecraft , Tomb Raider, Team Fortress 2, Mega Man, and Super Mario Bros. From Mario to Kratos, from Lara Croft to Ryu, Jack Black transforms into th...
