Game Scoop's Game of the Year '90s Edition

As some of you may know, IGN was founded in 1996 and we began handing out our Game of the Year awards in 2001, leaving years of top games uncrowned. We decided to remedy this as part of ’90s Week, and this week’s Game Scoop decided to go year-by-year through the decade to crown a Game of the Year for each year, starting with 1990. Since IGN wasn’t around at the beginning of the 1990s, we had to be a bit freeform with the science behind our judgment. Some games were awarded based on their historical importance, while others were simply our favorite games to come out that year. Some games, as you’ll see later on, qualified because of both. And while Game Scoop won’t pretend to speak for the entire IGN team, here are our picks for GOTY 90s edition. 1990 – TIE – Final Fantasy and Secret of Monkey Island The year saw the beginnings of one of the most beloved and important RPG franchises of all time, but also one of the crowning achievements of the narrative-based, point-and-click gen

Plankton Revealed as Next Nick All-Stars Brawl 2 Character With a Full Breakdown by Smash Pro

Plankton from SpongeBob Squarepants has been revealed as Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 's newest fighter. Plankton joins the likes of Squidward Tentacles and Jimmy Neutron as new fighters alongside a slew of characters returning from the 2021 original, including SpongeBob Squarepants, April O'Neil from the Ninja Turtles, and Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Plankton's reveal trailer features Mr. Krabs' rival piloting a mech suit before putting a beating on his opponents using ketchup-based attacks, his wife Karen (who also happens to be a computer), and lasers. You can still see — and hear — the aquatic microorganism as he barks threats and steers his mech using its antennae. Plankton's inclusion in the game lends further cadence to a supposed leak that predicted his inclusion in the game as one of its new combatants. Set to release sometime later this year, this sequel promises to fix some of the original's biggest issues, like the game's lack of

Overwatch 2 Recruits John Cena to Promote Invasion's PvE Campaign, But He Won't be in the Game

For the last week or so, a mysterious figure has been "hacking" into Overwatch 2 games and streams. Fans quickly realized that the "hacks" were a promotion for Overwatch 2: Invasion — the shooter's new event featuring the rollout of the first wave of player-versus-environment [PvE] missions. Based on clues within the "hacking attacks," fans also deduced that popular wrestler and actor John Cena would have some role to play in the upcoming content. It turns out that Cena is indeed the mysterious "Enigma," but it seems as if he might have less of a role to play than one might expect given his prominent placement. In a new video released alongside a trailer for the new PvE storyline, Cena was unmasked as The Enigma while calling for new heroes to join in on the fight against Null Sector. Null Sector’s forces are attacking Rio, Gothenburg, and Toronto 🤖 Defend the world in #Overwatch2 Invasion Story Missions on Aug 10 at 12pm PT 📆 An

Hades Diehard Accomplishes Run Most Considered To Be Impossible

Image
Nearly three years since Hades was released, crowned IGN’s own Game of the Year in 2020 , and after thousands of hours played by individual members of its hardcore community, no one had beaten the toughest challenge the game had to offer: a "Max Heat Run." Many Hades players are unlikely to ever interact with its Pact of Punishment system at all, which only becomes available after the player’s first successful run. It allows players to self-impose additional difficulty to an already challenging roguelite by selecting things like giving all enemies more health and removing reward choices found at the end of most encounters. And by electing to turn up the system's "Heat Gauge" in specific ways, additional rewards can be unlocked, extending the longevity for those who are looking for excuses to continue hanging out with Zagreus and friends. A "Max Heat Run," with the Heat Gauge turned up as high as it will go, was quite literally never designed to be

Project L, Riot's Fighting Game Based on League of Legends, Reveals Yasuo as Its Fourth Character

Riot Games revealed Yasuo as Project L's fourth playable fighter ahead of the upcoming fighting game's playable demo at EVO 2023. Late last month, Riot broke the news that Project L would be receiving a demo at EVO this year with four playable characters. The Los Angeles-based studio behind League of Legends and Valorant also announced that its next eSports venture would feature tag-team mechanics , allowing for up to four people to play in a single match in the same video. At the time, only three playable characters — also all originally from League of Legends — were announced: Ahri, Darius, and Ekko. Riot promised fans that this fourth character would be revealed in time for the demo, but provided no further information on the topic until his reveal this morning. One blade, one purpose. Yet this steel doesn’t get any lighter. Play Yasuo, the Unforgiven, along with Darius, Ekko, and Ahri at #Evo2023 . pic.twitter.com/Tasgf0TqQm — Riot Games (@riotgames) August 4, 20

Baldur's Gate 3 Can't Save for Some Players Due to Bug, But There Are Some Solutions

A Baldur's Gate 3 bug that prevents players from saving is making the rounds on the internet, causing some to lose a fair amount of progress right off the bat. "I also have this issue," one player wrote on the game's Steam Forums in response to a plea for a solution "This plus a crash meant I had to go through character creation and the first 20 min on the ship all over again. Not an auspicious start." Players experience the issue are finding that their game gets stuck syncing, preventing them from either saving or loading in Baldur's Gate 3. Some players have suggested turning off cross-save functionality, which has worked for some but not others. Other players have effectively scrubbed their installations clean and started from scratch. Baldur's Gate 3's First Post-Release Mod Let's Players Multiclass on All Difficulties

Baldur's Gate 3 is finally out of early access and the first mod to drop since its full release allows PC Players to multiclass for the easiest difficulty. NexusMod user TheComposerMods uploaded a mod that unlocks multiclass in the full-release version of Baldur's Gate 3. The mod's description notes that once the mod is properly installed, it will unlock the multiclassing feature "for all difficulties" and will work for both new and mid-playthrough campaigns, though the latter won't activate until your next level up. Multiclassing – a feature in Baldur's Gate 3 that allows players to combine more than one class together to create a more customizable character based on their preferred playstyles – was already available in the game. However, if you played on the Explorer (the game's easy mode) difficulty, you were barred from accessing multiclass. While some are expressing gratitude for the mod's creation, one user pointed out that the deve

Baldur's Gate 3 Writer Says New RPG Is 'Big-Budget Horny' in a Way AAA Games Have Never Seen

Baldur's Gate 3 is currently soaring up the charts on Steam, and there's one big reason why (aside from the fact that it's by all accounts a very good RPG): fans are thirsty for its romances. Larian Studios offered a sneak peek of Baldur's Gate 3 numerous romances earlier this year, including one with a Druid featuring, well, bear sex . These romances have sparked considerable interest in Larian Studios' new RPG, serving to propel it to the top of Steam's best-sellers list. In fact, it's so popular that it's causing Steam to buckle a bit under a bit under the pressure. Spent the past week or so doing final tests on some companion romance arcs, and… damn, I’m still surprised at just how horny this game is. Baldur's Gate 3 Review in Progress

Baldur’s Gate is estimated to clock in at around 100 hours on a first playthrough. Review copies were distributed this past Sunday morning; this first draft you’re reading was due the following Wednesday. I am, sadly, not a Time Wizard (yet), so I'm going to do my best to help you make a day one buying decision based on what I've played so far and update this article as I go along with new thoughts and insights until we can roll credits. At around 22 hours deep – still within the first act that was available to Early Access players – I can say that I more or less love Larian's latest high-fantasy behemoth. One issue video games often run into when trying to adapt the experience of playing Dungeons & Dragons on the tabletop is the freedom and imagination you get to express in overcoming problems using real-world logic. And while no game will probably ever match that level of freedom, Baldur's Gate 3 is a big step forward from the likes of Skyrim or Dragon Age. An

Call of Duty Will Now Show You When a Cheater Has Been Removed from a Game

Activision has announced its Riochet anti-cheat system will now notify Call of Duty players when it has kicked out an individual for cheating. In a tweet, Activision said Call of Duty's kill feed will notify lobbies in both Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0 when the anti-cheat system has detected and removed a "problem player". RICOCHET has entered the chat 🛡️ Starting in Season 05, the kill feed will notify lobbies when #TeamRICOCHET and it's systems have removed a problem player from the game. — Call of Duty (@CallofDuty) August 2, 2023 This is the latest effort from Activision as it attempts to crack down on cheating PC players in Call of Duty. Earlier this week, it was reported that Call of Duty banned more than 14,000 Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone cheaters in just a single day. Last June, Activision threatened to take away weapons for players caught cheating in Call of Duty. Activision has even gone as far as to say that if you were previously caught

The 10 Best-Selling Video Games of All Time

Image
Games have always existed in a numbers-obsessed industry. Sega vs. Nintendo defined a generation in the '90s, while today's comparatively mild console wars and monthly NPD reports keep sales figures near the forefront of games-related discussion. New monetization models require new metrics for success — monthly active users, player retention rates, in-game revenue, etc. — but one of the industry's biggest questions remains: What are the best-selling video games of all time? To answer this question, we set out to compile the most accurate list possible by reaching out to publishers and digging through financial reports, news stories, interviews, and more. The result is the following list of the ten best-selling video games of all time. Some notes up front: Pack-in games are counted toward sales totals, considering most games on this list were, at one point, bundled with a console. Free downloads are not counted as sales, which excludes massively successful games like

Stormcloud Vapor Xbox Controller Is Up for Preorder (and Out Soon)

If you’re into stylish color schemes for your controllers, you should probably get an Xbox. Not only can you design your own , but Microsoft is always coming out with new official controller color schemes. The latest Xbox controller design is called Stormcloud Vapor, and it looks great. It costs $69.99 and it’s out soon, on August 8, but preorders are live now ( see it at Amazon ). Preorder Stormcloud Vapor Xbox Controller See it at Amazon See it at Best Buy See it at GameStop See it at Microsoft The design is a blue and black swirl that basically looks like mist. The exact design of the swirl is unique to each controller, so you won’t have to worry that your swirl looks just like everyone else’s. And for added grippiness, the back case of the controller has rubberized blue diamond-pattern grips. I don’t know if you’ve used an Xbox controller with rubberized grips, but the comfort level and ease of holding the thing are actually noticeable. Grips, it turns out, are good. As

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Leaks Again, Activision Gets in on the Joke

One key art image for the game, which appeared on Imgur , shows a spooky skull with a snake going through it while another shows Captain Price. A list of weapons a

Nintendo Still Has Metroid Prime 4 Down as a Switch Game

Nintendo has outlined upcoming Nintendo Switch exclusives and still lists the long-absent Metroid Prime 4 as a Switch game. As part of its latest financial report ( which show sales and profits boosted by Tears of the Kingdom and The Super Mario Bros. Movie ), Nintendo listed all the upcoming and announced games coming to the Nintendo Switch. Notably, the list includes Metroid Prime 4 (which still carries a “temp” title and 'TBA' release date). Nintendo Just Had a Huge Quarter Thanks to Tears of the Kingdom and The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Nintendo saw huge revenue and profit gains off the back of the enormous success of Tears of the Kingdom and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold an impressive 18.51 million units as of the end of June 2023, Nintendo said. Reporting its financial results for the three months ending June 30, Nintendo said Tears of the Kingdom “got off to a good start” following its launch on May 12, “significantly” increasing overall software sales but also driving sales of the Nintendo Switch. In fact, sales of first-party software this quarter reached the highest level for a first quarter since the launch of Nintendo Switch in 2017. “Sell-through of this one title constitutes approximately half of the first-party software sold this fiscal year,” Nintendo said. “Consumers who played the previous entry, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, have been the primary driver, but as the weeks have passed, we have seen that a growing percentage of purchases are bei

Diablo 4 Patch 1.1.1 Leaves Fans Much Happier After Sorceress Buffs and Other Key Fixes

Diablo IV Patch 1.1.1's full notes are finally here, and it seems as if fans are actually kind of... happy? Patch notes for the new Diablo IV update dropped earlier today, bringing with it some crucial fixes, including an update to a bugged Barber malignant power that was effectively useless. What's more, the patch includes solid buffs for the much-maligned Sorceress class. "As a Chain Lightning Sorc... I'm f*cking stoked," one Reddit user wrote. "Build was already fun enough pre-patch." Barbarian likewise received attention with a focus on speeding up combat flow by increasing Fury generation on basic skills. The lengthy patch notes touch on everything from Treasure Goblins to Nightmare Dungeons to Malignant Hearts, fixing many of the major problems that fans have had with Season 1. Blizzard community manager Adam Fletcher also confirmed that the patch addresses Diablo IV's VRAM memory leak. Yeah this one has some changes to VRAM managemen
