Ready or Not Back on Steam Following a Takedown Request Concerning Trademark Infringement

Ready or Not, the tactical, first-person shooter that entered Early Access in 2021, is back on Steam after a takedown request was issued concerning trademark infringement. As reported by NME, the issue was related to a level that depicted a mass shooting at a nightclub and one that was released on the anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting. The nightclub in Ready or Not was called Prysm. Ready or Not developer VOID Interactive announced that its game was back on Steam earlier today, June 18, saying it was "very sorry about this downtime and hope it was not too inconvenient." pic.twitter.com/yIM99niPZX — VOID Interactive (@VOIDInteractive) June 18, 2022 This apology arrives after it addressed rumors surrounding "the takedown of Ready or Not and its associated pages on Steam that occurred on Thursday, June 16th." "A takedown request was issued via Steam concerning a suggested trademark infringement in our recent Night Club map that was shared as

Diablo Immortal's Microtransactions Have Made It $24 Million In Two Weeks

Diablo Immortal appears to be off to a strong start, as the mobile-focused take on the Blizzard franchise has generated over $24 million USD in revenue in its first two weeks. As reported by PCGamesN, industry tracking website AppMagic has shared some interesting tidbits of data for the free-to-play Diablo Immortal alongside the microtransactions details, including that the USA and South Korea have spent the most money and that the game has been downloaded more than five million times. The US has accounted for 26% of all global downloads and 43% of the previously mentioned revenue. Speaking of revenue, South Korea is in second place at 23% and Japan takes third with 8%. These impressive numbers were achieved despite many players being upset about the implementation of Diablo Immortal's microtransactions. Certain players have complained about Immortal's best loot seemingly being very difficult to get without spending a lot of money, and even then that loot isn't gua

EA Boss Andrew Wilson Got a $20m Pay Cut Last Year, But It's Complicated

EA CEO Andrew Wilson took a pay cut last year at the behest of shareholders, and we finally know by about how much: a whopping $20 million. But, as with most executive pay scenarios, the intricacies of Wilson's pay are not quite that simple. In the previous year, 2021, Wilson earned $39.2 million between his base salary of $1.25 million and a bundle of various stock awards, grants, and other types of extra compensation that are typical for top executives. But the EA board of directors was under pressure to reform those numbers. A 2020 "say on pay" vote by shareholders had indicated that only 26% of the company's shareholders were happy with the current pay schemes, after similar votes in previous years had indicated overwhelming support for executive pay. The wave of displeasure was at least partially instigated by CtW Investment Group , an organization that over the years has taken a number of companies to task over high executive pay, including EA and Activisio

Is The Last of Us Remake Worth $70?

It may have not been a total surprise thanks to leaks more than a year ago , and sadly on the very morning of its reveal , but a remake of the 2013 masterpiece The Last of Us is officially coming to PS5 this September , with a PC release to follow. The remake of Naughty Dog’s epic PS3 action-horror game is visually a big step up from the remastered version released in 2014 for PlayStation 4. That’s because this remake isn’t just a simple uprezzed, slightly revamped port running on PlayStation 5. The Last of Us Part 1, as it’s officially called, features fully redone character models and environments , tons of improved textures, improved animations, 60 FPS performance, new accessibility features, and new combat options and revamped enemy AI building off the work done in The Last of Us Part 2. Awesome! This means it will not only look much better than any of the previous versions of the game, but the gameplay will be slightly different, too. Or dynamic, as the marketing departments love

Forza 8 Will Have Realtime Ray Tracing Along With a Full Night and Day Cycle

Forza Motosport 8 is getting a number of exciting features including realtime ray tracing and an all-new career mode according to today's Forza Monthly livestream . The information comes from the game's Creative Director, Chris Esaki. According to Esaki, the game will sport a full night and day cycle and varying weather forecasts for all tracks. These will only be enhanced by the game's realtime ray tracing. These tracks, whether they're new or returning, have been built from the ground up for this iteration of Forza. The weather aspect will also determine how you drive affecting things like traction, grip and more. To make it even more dynamic, tires in-game have been drastically upgraded to include eight contact points. Forza Motorsport 7's tires only included one, according to Esaki. In terms of gameplay, players can expect an all new career mode and a racing weekend-style multiplayer with multiple steps to complete like practice, qualifiers, and the final

Activision Blizzard Board Finds 'No Evidence' It Ignored or Downplayed Harassment

After conducting its own internal investigation, Activision Blizzard's Board of Directors claims it has found 'no evidence' to suggest that its senior executives and its own members ignored or downplayed gender harassment. It's also urging its shareholders to vote against an upcoming proposal to craft a report about its own efforts to prevent abuse and harassment. In a new SEC filing , Activision Blizzard asserted: "[T]he Board and its external advisors have determined that there is no evidence to suggest that Activision Blizzard senior executives ever intentionally ignored or attempted to downplay the instances of gender harassment that occurred and were reported. That work also has not unearthed any evidence, directly or indirectly, suggesting any attempt by any senior executive or employee to conceal information from the Board. Outside advisors, after exhaustive review, also determined the Board never intentionally ignored or attempted to downplay the instan

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Is Now a Three-Part Trilogy

Today at Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 25th Anniversary Celebration Livestream, the next installment in the Final Fantasy 7 universe, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, was revealed in a brand new trailer . Alongside that information, it was also revealed that Rebirth would be the second in what is now a three-part trilogy from Square Enix. The trilogy situates itself in the greater Final Fantasy 7 Compilation with the newly announced Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion , which will be out this winter. Final Fantasy 7 Remake stayed faithful to the original in many ways, but there were a number of changes that had fans both confused and intrigued for what's to come. pic.twitter.com/gB7CafhSUb — FINAL FANTASY VII (@finalfantasyvii) June 16, 2022 Today's new trailer asks the question, "What is fact and what is fiction?" This points toward some of the larger narrative changes featured in the remake of the beloved 1997 JRPG. The trailer features more questions than answers

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 Comes Out Next Winter

Square Enix has revealed the first trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Part 2, and it is officially called Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Revealed during Square Enix's 25th Anniversary event for the original Final Fantasy 7, the second part in the company's planned multi-part series will release next winter in 2023. Rebirth appears to divert dramatically from the plot of Final Fantasy 7 where it was left off in Remake, in keeping with the ways in which Remake already indicated the sequence of events might not be the same as fans of the original remember. In the trailer, we got to see a lot of Crisis Core's Zack Fair, for instance, who is supposed to have died at the end of the original Crisis Core but was set up for an appearance during Remake. Since we also got an announcement of a Crisis Core remake called Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion today, it's likely we see all of these stories dovetail into something new and unexpected. Final Fantasy 7 Remake was released

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion Announced for This Winter

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 is really real, with Zack in all his glory. Announced at today's Final Fantasy 7 25th Anniversary stream, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is planned for release on Xbox Series X and S, PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC sometime this winter. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is a prequel to the original Final Fantasy 7, released for PSP in the west in 2008. The game gained unexpected new relevance when Final Fantasy 7 Remake seemed to include a shot-for-shot remake of Crisis Core's ending, but drastically changed its outcome , seemingly setting up prequel protagonist Zack Fair for an appearance in the main games. We caught another glimpse of Zack later during the show, too, as part of the trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth , indicating that he'll continue to have a greater role in the remake series as well as it seems to be shifting a number of the original game's main story beats. With Final Fantasy 7 Remake now situated as a trilogy ,

Dragon's Dogma 2 Officially In Development and Its Being Built on the RE Engine

Image
Capcom has officially announced Dragon's Dogma 2, a sequel to the studio's 2012 action RPG. Hideaki Itsuno, the director of the original Dragon's Dogma, announced the sequel at the end of the 10 Years of Dragon's Dogma livestream today. Besides learning that it the new game is being developed on the RE Engine, we received no further information about the game besides a logo on a shirt worn by Itsuno. Dragon's Dogma was directed by Capcom's Hideaki Itsuno, best known for his work on Devil May Cry. Dragon's Dogma's focus on real-time combat in a dark medieval fantasy world intrigued fans, but it was the deep action system, AI-controlled allies, and deep RPG roots that earned it a lot of fans . Even when the series failed financially. While fans' hope for a proper sequel was dim, Capcom's high-profile data leak, which indicated Dragon's Dogma 2 in the works , led to a new optimism. There was also hope after Netflix chose to bring a Dra

Canned Returnal Concepts Could Be In Next Housemarque Game

Fans of Returnal might get to see the spirit of the game live on in Housemarque's next game. According to Video Game Chronicle , cut concepts of the game could find a home in the studio's next IP. Today VCG published a portion of an upcoming interview with Returnal narrative designer Eevi Korhonen. In the interview Korhonen spoke about how ambitious the bullet hell, roguelike shooter was and commented on the studio's next steps. “We dreamt super big, but we still had to leave so much on the cutting room floor. All of these ideas and narrative systems. I’m super excited to pick up those pieces and see how those fit our new IP story." “We didn’t quite have the handle on how big [Returnal] was going to be, building for a new platform on a new engine with a new team, all of those things require some learning. Now we have that team that has gone through the fire and learned how to build a game like Returnal. So now we get to start off stronger," Korhonen told VG

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course’s Amount of Animations Is Equivalent to the Entire Base Game

Do you ever think about hand-drawn animation? Like really, really think about it? And the absolutely massive amount of artwork that goes into even making a single short walk cycle? StudioMDHR certainly thought about it a lot during the development of Cuphead. Then the studio turned right around for Delicious Last Course and decided to do about the same amount of animation work again. For a DLC. According to Maja Moldenhauer, the sheer volume of animations in Delicious Last Course stemmed from the team’s desire to bring to life everything they had left on the cutting room floor of the original Cuphead, with a playable Miss Chalice serving as a catalyst for the rest. “We really wanted to experiment with the art form…I don't have an inventory yet or a frame count, but it is comparable to the entire core game in this one DLC. [...] With the additional frames of animation, we moved from that more basic style, early thirties [Disney], closer to Fantasia. I say that loosely, it is n

Cuphead Studio Director on Delays And Long Development: ‘Who Cares?’

Professional animators who still animate by hand in 2D are hard to find, says StudioMDHR’s Maja Moldenhauer. And it’s understandable given how the style of animation has given way to digital animation, and how physically demanding good animation can be. Which is why, she says, StudioMDHR had to take care of the handful of folks it found to work on Cuphead and its DLC: Delicious Last Course – around 18 developers total, and only about six animators at the height of DLC development. Even if that meant both took a very, very long time to make – over a decade, in fact. “It's hard to find people,” she says. “The number one thing, especially through COVID was keeping everybody happy. This is video games. Take your time. Mental health needed to be at the forefront, taking the space and time that you needed, especially over the last two years. We're like, ‘If it takes longer for the game to come out, it takes longer. Who cares?’ Moldenhauer goes further to explain that much of th

Capcom Reverses Resident Evil PC Upgrade Decision After 'Overwhelming Community Response'

Capcom has reversed its decision to force upgrades of the PC versions of Resident Evil 2 Remake, Resident Evil 3 Remake, and Resident Evil 7. The updated versions - that lined up with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series upgrades being released - added ray tracing and enhanced 3D audio, but also raised the system requirements and caused performance issues for some users, causing many players to call for a choice to return to the old versions. Announced on each game's Steam page , the developer said it had made the older versions of the games available again "due to overwhelming community response". There's a little bit of work to do before the older versions can be played again but Capcom gave step by step instructions on how to revert the games back (the instructions are the same for each game). Players will therefore be able to choose which version of the game they want going forward. The enhanced edition updates were announced in March alongside the next-ge

Last of Us Part 1 Remake Shows Off Incredible New Version of Tess

Naughty Dog has unveiled an incredible new model for The Last of Us Part 1's version of key character Tess. Shared in a tweet (below), the developer put the original, PlayStation 3 character (played by Annie Wersching) side-by-side with the upcoming PlayStation 5 remake's version, and the difference is pretty astounding. While the clip is only a few seconds long, several rewatches are probably required to take in every difference between the two versions, from the intense facial animations to the details on Tess's shirt and backpack – and even her height. Naughty Dog co-president and The Last of Us creative director Neil Druckmann added his own commentary to the clip. "Annie Wersching' destroyed us with her performance as Tess," he tweeted . "Love that we get to better show off her acting chops with Part 1." Tess' glow up ✨ @Wersching 9 years ago vs. September 2, 2022 -- #TheLastofUs Part I pic.twitter.com/jDoT9bMmL1 — Naughty Dog (@Nau

Steelrising Is Looking Like a Surprisingly Good Bloodborne Tribute

Developer Spiders is best known as something of a BioWare tribute studio . Its most successful game, GreedFall, is the latest in a modest line of RPGs that draw heavily upon the likes of Mass Effect and Dragon Age. But Spiders’ next game, Steelrising, is nothing like a BioWare game at all. Instead, it’s an ode to FromSoftware. Specifically, it is Bloodborne set in the French Revolution, with Yarnham’s beasts swapped out for Parisian clockwork robots. As a pitch, it sounds a little derivative (at least mechanically). But despite seemingly minimal innovations, playing Steelrising reveals something that has genuine promise. At a recent hands-on event I was able to play around three hours of Steelrising, which covered the opening locations and the first major boss. Playing as Aegis, a clockwork automaton ballerina-turned-bodyguard, I explored a small variety of twisty rural village and Parisian city locations that knotted themselves together with shortcut routes. As I tore apart robotic

Where Will StudioMDHR Go After Cuphead? ‘The Sky’s the Limit’

StudioMDHR has been working on Cuphead in one way or other for over a decade now. With Delicious Last Course imminent, though, StudioMDHR has to look toward the future. Could there be more Cuphead after Cuphead? According to Maja Moldenhauer, StudioMDHR got to work on Delicious Last Course because it still had left plenty of Cuphead on the cutting room floor after the first time around. Elements such as a playable Miss Chalice, and many of Delicious Last Course’s new bosses, were ideas born during the original game’s development that needed the extra time of a DLC to see the light of day. But now, with Delicious Last Course wrapped, Moldenhauer says there’s nothing left sitting on a drawing board somewhere. “We got it all in.” So where does that leave StudioMDHR, a studio that has been about nothing but Cuphead since 2010? Moldenhauer confirms that while this is indeed the end of Cuphead ‘Don’t Deal With the Devil,’ it’s certainly not the end for the studio’s work. She isn’t givi

Kingdom Hearts 4's Graphics Power 'Kind Of Limits' the Number Of Disney Worlds That Can Be Included

Disney worlds have been a staple of the beloved Kingdom Hearts series since the first game released in 2002. According to a new interview with game director Tetsuya Nomura at Game Informer , fans of those magical, nostalgia-filled worlds might see fewer of them in Kingdom Hearts 4 due to graphical limitations. Fans of those Disney-based worlds shouldn’t fret, though. Nomura confirms “players are definitely going to see a few Disney worlds in there” and fans “don't need to worry” about their inclusion. He goes on to say that Kingdom Hearts 4 “might feel slightly different from previous Kingdom Hearts titles.” We’ve gotten one look at the upcoming game , and it shows Sora in a world called Quadratum that looks close to our own. It is definitely a departure from the more fantasy-based worlds in the first three installments and their various spin-offs. “As far as the graphic qualities ... since with each new title, the specs have been really increasing and there's so much mo

Kingdom Hearts 4 Trying To Find a 'Good Balance' For Final Fantasy Characters

One of the main selling points of the Kingdom Hearts games was the weird mashup of Disney and Final Fantasy characters. Kingdom Hearts director Tetsuya Nomura recently sat down with Game Informer to discuss Kingdom Hearts 4 and addressed several questions, including concerns about Final Fantasy characters. When asked about the relative lack of Final Fantasy characters in recent Kingdom Hearts entires, Nomura had this to say: I understand there weren't that many Final Fantasy characters in Kingdom Hearts III. One thing I want to clear up is that a lot of fans are saying that Kingdom Hearts is this collaboration between Disney characters and Final Fantasy characters. But I really feel like that's not the basic concept of Kingdom Hearts; that's not exactly what Kingdom Hearts is. When we released the first title, we had only a few original Kingdom Hearts characters. When they were interacting with really well-known, beloved Disney characters, I felt nobody really knew th

Obsidian, and Why Xbox’s Acquisition Strategy is Staying Out of the Way

When Feargus Urquhart walked into a 2018 pitch meeting with then-Xbox senior director of business development Noah Musler, he thought he was pitching Avowed. But what he was really pitching was the entirety of Obsidian Entertainment. They were having breakfast at that year’s E3, just after Xbox announced it was acquiring Undead Labs, Playground Games, Ninja Theory, and Compulsion Games, as well as establishing The Initiative. At the time, Urquhart wasn’t even aware of the industry-shaking news. He was, as he tells me, “plugged into his own stuff,” focused on making Avowed look as appealing as possible to people like Musler who could potentially help Obsidian get it out the door in a few years. He made the pitch for Avowed. Musler responded by suggesting Urquhart repeat his pitch again…this time in a bigger room, with more Xbox folks listening in. It wasn’t until the middle of that week that Musler called Urquhart back and told him that what he had really sold Xbox on was acquiring
