Why Some Mass Effect Fans Want to Keep the Original Mako

The announcement of the Mass Effect Legendary Edition last November may not have made as big a splash as the reveal of a new game in BioWare's sci-fi series , but it did raise all sorts of questions. Will they add any clarifying easter eggs? Will I be able to create the same Shepard I did 14 years ago? Are they going to make Kaiden romanceable from the beginning? All of these are worthy queries, but in the immediate aftermath of the unveiling one debate reigned supreme on the Mass Effect subreddit : Should they make the Mako better, or leave it exactly as it was, in all its janky glory? You remember the Mako, right? The first Mass Effect game introduced a hardy six-wheeled tank that Commander Shepard used whenever they made landfall on any of the galaxy map's boring, arid planets. It was a novel enough idea in theory – nobody wants to traverse a barren spacescape on foot, so why not offer the player a taste of the lunar rover fantasy? The Mako seemed like a tidy solution to ...

New Ratchet and Clank Animated Short Is Unrelated to PS5's Rift Apart

A brand new Ratchet & Clank animated short has appeared mysteriously on the Canadian streaming service Crave. But according to PlayStation, Ratchet & Clank: Life of Pie is an original licensed animation unrelated to the upcoming PS5 game Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Last night, Reddit users discovered a mysterious new Ratchet & Clank animation on the streaming service Crave . More than that, Life of Pie also starred the original voice cast for the Ratchet & Clank video games. The animation was done by Mainframe, which created the animated movie, and the credits say the feature was produced in 2019. But PlayStation confirmed to IGN that Life of Pie is not related to the upcoming PS5 game and not canon. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/11/ratchet-clank-rift-apart-release-date-trailer"] “Ratchet & Clank: Life of Pie is a standalone, licensed animated special created and distributed by Mainframe Studios,” says a PlayStation spokesperson. ...

System Shock 2 VR Officially Announced

System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition is getting a fully playable VR mode. IGN can exclusively reveal that Nightdive Studios is working on the fully-fleshed VR mode complete with its own VR-focused development team. It began when Nightdive Studios posted a tweet in January showing Nightdive Studios CEO Stephen Kick using a VR controller to play System Shock 2. The tweet served as a hint at what Nightdive Studios was already looking into for its enhanced version of the sequel, which was whether or not VR could work for System Shock 2 . “During the process of reverse-engineering the missing libraries for System Shock 2, we had an opportunity to play around with the idea of creating a standalone VR version,” says Kick in an interview with IGN. “And so we brought on an [VR] expert to look about the cod and give us a brief idea of what kind of things we could do.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2016/03/15/system-shock-enhanced-edition-official-pre-alpha-gameplay-trailer"] Wi...

Militsioner Is the Giant Russian Policeman Escape Simulator Your Life Has Been Missing

You’ve almost certainly played some weird games in your time, but have you played a game in which you attempt to escape a town where everyone thinks you’re a criminal, and your every move is watched by a gigantic policeman who towers over the horizon? That’s the premise of Militsioner, a delightfully strange immersive sim from Russian developer TallBoys. Oh, and you can talk to the policeman with your actual voice. Just in case it wasn’t strange enough for you yet. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/12/militsioner-official-gameplay-trailer"] TallBoys has released a new gameplay trailer, which you can watch above, that demonstrates the voice mechanics and shows off the world and tone. The immediate vibe is Half-Life 2’s City 17; it’s drenched in a communist dystopian atmosphere, and has a giant face in the sky watching you at all times. The difference, though, is that in City 17 you couldn’t answer back to Dr. Breen, but in Militsioner you can get snarky with yo...

Six Days In Fallujah Publisher Insists the Game Is Not a US Army Recruiting Tool

Six Days in Fallujah is not a US Army recruiting tool, according to the publisher of the game, Victura. Six Days in Fallujah is a tactical shooter based on the events that took place in 2004 during the Second Battle of Fallujah in Iraq, and a revival of a game originally announced (and abandoned) in 2009 . Its reannouncement caused hot debate, and raised questions about its use as a potential recruiting tool for the US armed forces. The game's new publisher, Victura, insists the game is not associated with the US government, and will not be used in recruiting. Victura did, however, speak to over 100 marines, soldiers, and Iraqi civilians in the making of the game. "The US government is not involved in making the game, nor are there any plans to use it for recruiting," Victura says in a  FAQ . "The Marines, Soldiers, and Iraqi civilians who've helped us participated as private citizens, and the game is being financed independently." [widget path="global/...

Halo Wars 3 Not in the Works, Leaving Open Rumours of a Different Spin-Off

343 Industries has confirmed that it is not working on another Halo Wars game. After job listings suggested an unannounced Halo project is in the works, the announcement leaves open speculation about a less expected spin-off. In this week's Halo Community Update , the 343 team was clear about the future of the Halo Wars sub-series: "343 Industries has no current plans for further Halo Wars 2 work including content updates, balance patches, bringing the title to other platforms, or a new game in the series [...] There is no plan for the development team to re-engage with Halo Wars 2 and we aren’t working on a new game in the series at this time." However, if you are a fan, there was a glimmer of hope. "We’re specifically never going to say never because, well, who knows what the future may bring." Kickstarter Hit Eiyuden Chronicle to Be Published by 505 Games

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, the spiritual successor to Suikoden, will be published by 505 Games, with the developers promising "even higher quality" as a result of the partnership. The publisher revealed its partnership with Rabbit & Bear Studios in a YouTube video published earlier this week.  Studio Lead Yoshitaka Murayama thanked fans for their support, adding "With this partnership, I believe that we can deliver Eiyuden Chronicle to our fans, following the original concept with even higher quality standards." Murayama also said that Eiyuden Chronicle was the "first of hopefully many games" the team wish to bring to fans around the world. Eiyuden Chronicle benefitted from an extremely successful Kickstarter campaign in 2020, where it surpassed its goal in one day and became the  third-most successful Kickstarter video game, raising over $4.5 million. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Is One of the Best Selling Games in US History

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is already the 20th best-selling game (in dollar sales) since sales tracking for US games began. In the NPD report for January sales in the US (and pointed out by NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella ), Black Ops Cold War was the country's best-selling game for the third straight month, since its release in November. In just two months on sale, it became the best-selling game of 2020 according to NPD's stats (although those figures didn't account for digital sales of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which may have beaten it to the title). As a result of just those three months of huge sales, Black Ops Cold War is now 20th on the NPD's list of best-selling games – although, given that they're based on dollar sales, it may be that inflation could shift that list somewhat. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/13/call-of-duty-black-ops-cold-war-campaign-review"] The stats make clear just how huge Black Ops Cold War has ...

Call of Duty: Warzone: Teasers Suggest Zombies and Nova Gas are Coming

Call of Duty Warzone appears to be teasing a Zombies crossover, with out-of-place trial machines and screen distortion being reported by players. As spotted by Eurogamer , an unfinished version of the Cold War Zombies Trial Machine has cropped up in the Verdansk Hospital in Warzone's Rumble playlist. You can see the machine in this tweet from EricMaynardII.  When approached, the player is given a prompt which reads ZAI/ACTIVATE_ZOMBIES, but it does nothing. The script for the prompt is clearly not what it should be - it feels like players weren't supposed to find this yet, or maybe it's part of a wider easter egg or ARG. Soooooo.... Overwatch Ex-Lead Writer Working on a New 'Multiplayer Character-Action Game' for 2K

The ex-lead writer of Overwatch, Michael Chu, is working on a "multiplayer character-action game" for new 2K Games studio 31st Union . Twitter user  MauroNL  put together a thread looking at 31st Union's job openings. The most telling nugget of info comes from the Senior Software Engineer listing, which calls 31st Union's upcoming game a "multiplatform multiplayer character-action game," which sounds like a similar premise to other hero shooters such as Overwatch or Team Fortress 2. A Senior Engine Programmer listing also calls the game "AAA," desiring a candidate familiar with "PS4, Xbox One, IOS and Android development tools." Other listings mention familiarity with Unreal Engine 4, suggesting this is the engine the game is being built in. The Best Soulslike Games

The legacy of FromSoftware’s Souls series is not defined just by the amazing games that its made up of, but also the subgenre that has been given life thanks to its very existence: the soulslike. McDonald's 'Strongly Encouraging' Restaurants to Prevent Happy Meal Pokemon Card Scalping

McDonald's has revealed it is "moving quickly" to restock Pokemon 25th Anniversary trading cards following reports that scalpers are profiting from the limited-edition packs – and is "strongly encouraging" restaurants to set a limit on how many packs they sell to individual customers. Yesterday, it was revealed that the commemorative Pokemon cards, which are only supposed to be attainable when customers buy a McDonald's Happy Meal, were being purchased in bulk by scalpers and sold for ridiculously high sums online. In some instances, full boxes of the packs were being posted on sites including eBay for over $1,500. @McDonalds @Pokemon I sure hope you do some form of inventory control for your promo Pokémon cards as some of your stock is being sold in sealed boxes which means they’re not even making it to your stores Though same thing happened with Tim Hortons Hockey too.
