Minecraft Dungeons Features Hilarious Diablo 2 Reference for Dedicated Fans

Image
Minecraft Dungeons, out on May 26, is often compared to the Diablo franchise for featuring top-down dungeon-crawling combat and exploration. Heck, we made the comparison in our mostly favorable review . It looks like the developers behind Minecraft Dungeons are all too familiar with the franchise, since they evidently planted a hilarious easter egg that dedicated Diablo 2 fans will probably appreciate. Minor spoilers for Minecraft Dungeons content below: Noticed by Lords of Gaming , Minecraft Dungeons players can access a secret area that’s a direct reference to a similarly secret area in Diablo 2. According to Lords of Gaming, it requires players to beat the game once on each game difficulty. Near the player’s camp, there’s a drawbridge that’s raised during the main game. Once you’re able to cross it, players will find a church with pixel portraits of the Minecraft Dungeons developer team and a dog, plus a button with ten runes. Once players find those runes across the game’s levels

Original Assassin's Creed Side Missions Made Five Days Before Launch

Looking back at the Assassin’s Creed series, it’s almost funny how one of the biggest franchises in gaming started out by receiving a modest 7.5 out of 10 from IGN . The first Assassin’s Creed game proved to feature interesting exploration of Crusades era cities, different (if wonky) combat, and way too many repetitive side missions, which had you either hunting down Templars or collecting countless flags strewn about. According to Charles Randall, who served as Ubisoft’s fight system AI lead on Assassin’s Creed, the game only had side missions because “the CEO’s kid played it,” and they were implemented only five days before the game was due to ship out to stores. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/09/24/every-ign-assassins-creed-review-score"] In a Twitter thread early Saturday (first reported on by Eurogamer ), Randall explained the odd story. By Randall’s account, Assassin’s Creed was pretty much ready to ship without any side missions. This apparently chan

Pac-Man Celebrates 40th Anniversary With Minecraft DLC and a Game You Play on Twitch

Image
Celebrating Pac-Man’s 40th anniversary this Friday, Bandai Namco has announced that the iconic yellow gobbler will come to Minecraft as a new DLC. Bandai Namco also announced Pac-Man Live Studio , a free version of the game that you can play literally on a Twitch stream. Bandai Namco worked with Amazon Games to bring Pac-Man Live Studio to life. The game allows up to four players to compete in one maze to eat the most pellets while surviving. Pretty standard Pac-Man stuff, but Live Studio will also let players create and share their own mazes, or just play the original Pac-Man map if they choose. Every public maze will go into a leaderboard which can be used to discover popular mazes from other streamers and creators. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/05/22/pac-man-40th-anniversary-join-the-pac-trailer"] The Pac-Man Minecraft DLC shifts things to a more modern perspective, with ten 3D mazes to explore, and some seriously oversized ghosts hunting you down. Sega Sued by Manchester United for Football Manager's Use of Club Name

Manchester United, one of Europe’s top football clubs, has sued Football Manager series creator Sega Publishing and Sports Interactive (SI Games) for allegedly infringing on the use of its trademarked club name “extensively throughout the game” according to the Guardian . The football club also alleged that SI Games infringed on their trademark by not using the actual Manchester United logo, and instead using a simpler default red and white logo. Manchester United stated that this “deprives the registered proprietor of its right to have the club crest licensed.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/11/18/football-manager-2020-announce-trailer"] Sega and SI Games have rebutted by saying that the use of Manchester United’s name is “a legitimate reference to the Manchester United football team in a football context” and added that the club name has been used in the video game franchise since 1992, when it was known as Championship Manager, according to the Guardian.

Minecraft Dungeons Review

When I first saw Minecraft Dungeons gameplay, I was like "Is that Diablo, but with Minecraft?" Now that I’ve played it, I’m like, yeah: Minecraft Dungeons is basically Diablo with a Minecraft skin. Sure, it doesn't mine the same mechanical depths as Diablo, and plays it safe with the formula instead of blazing its own path with bold Minecraft-inspired ideas, but it has all the fun combat, and loot it needs, and it’s accessible to just about anyone. I don't understand how Minecraft's intentionally low-res art style can look so high quality, but Minecraft Dungeons is the most beautiful Minecraft world I think I've ever seen. The Diablo series’ hellish inspirations and iconography are swapped out for Mojang’s blocky creepers and zombies, and it’s set in familiar locations like swamps, mountains, and villages made with vivid and gorgeous color. Even in the dark recesses of caverns and dungeons, everything looks great. I was particularly struck by some of the more

Sting, Shaggy to Debut New Music on Gary Whitta's Animal Crossing Talk Show

Image
Musicians Sting and Shaggy will both debut new music on Animal Talking , the live-streamed talk show hosted from Animal Crossing by Rogue One writer Gary Whitta. Whitta made the announcement on Twitter and during his wrap-up of season one of the show, which aired Friday morning. Shaggy, the reggae artist known for hits like “It Wasn’t Me” and “Angel,” is scheduled to join the show for the debut of its second season on June 1 to perform new music he is currently working on, Whitta said. Sting, the former frontman for The Police and a solo act since the mid-80’s, will be joining Animal Talking on June 8 to similarly debut new music. “It’s pretty nutty, and I’m excited about where we’re going to be going,” Whitta said on the show. Whitta didn't give any major details beyond those dates, so make sure to keep an eye on his Twitter feed for details. Call of Duty Season 4's New Operator May be Captain Price

Image
Captain Price, the famously mustachioed protagonist of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series, could potentially be a new operator in season four of the game’s multiplayer if some teasers are to be believed. First reported by Eurogamer , the teasers began with a message from the Call of Duty app, saying some sort of meeting would be taking place on May 21. That day, Activision sent out an email linking fans to a page on the Call of Duty website that included a mysterious video.  The video shows off a few familiar Call of Duty voices (one sounds like the CIA’s Kate Laswell, who handles player character Alex), a few gruff Russians, and one very obvious picture of Captain Price, complete with his fishing hat. It’s a pretty obvious teaser that Price, who is referenced in the video as a “senior operator,” will have some role to play in the near future. With season four expected to start on June 2, that would certainly follow the trend of teasing past operators like the reworked Ghost a

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Is April 2020's Best-Selling Game

Final Fantasy VII Remake was April 2020's best-selling game and it also set a new launch month Final Fantasy franchise sales record in both unit and dollar sales, surpassing 2016's Final Fantasy XV. As revealed by Mat Piscatella of The NPD Group, Final Fantasy VII Remake lead April 2020 sales, followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. April 2020 tracked spending across video game hardware, software, accessories, and game cards reached $1.5 billion, a 73% increase when compared to April 2019. This is also a new record for an April month, a milestone that was previously set by April 2008's $1.2 billion. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/05/13/one-month-later-did-the-final-fantasy-7-remake-deliver"] Dollar sales for tracked video game software also set a new record for an April month at $662 million, a 55% increase year-over-year and the highest since April 2008's $642 million. Nintendo Switch remained the best-sel

Maneater Review

Through a few millennia of hard work and dedication Sharks have earned a name for themselves as nature’s perfect killing machines, and Maneater’s titular sea monster certainly lives up to that reputation. Roaming the Gulf of Mexico as a pissed-off bull shark with an insatiable appetite for human flesh and mutagens like a one-shark Sharknado is certainly a campy thrill. Its limitation, though, is that it’s just as single-minded as its predator protagonist: the vast, vast majority of what you’ll do in Maneater are “go here, kill X of this animal or people” objectives by way of combat that’s as deep as a puddle, broken up by some amusing exploration and gathering of collectibles. I’m not saying it should’ve made us jump through hoops like a circus seal or anything, but there simply isn’t enough gameplay variety to justify the massive amount of chomping you have to do to reach megashark status. Our shark anti-hero has her own personal Captain Ahab in the form of a sleazy Cajun shark hunte

Naughty Dog Is Using Twitter's Newest Feature to Fight Last of Us 2 Spoilers

Image
Earlier this month substantial leaks for The Last of Us Part 2 made their way online. Since then, it’s become sadly easy to come across spoilers for the upcoming game on social media. Some have even taken to responding to every Naughty Dog Tweet and Facebook post with leaks. Now, Naughty Dog is using a brand new Twitter tool to try and at least fight spoilers from appearing on that particular social media service. It’s a new tool Twitter began testing yesterday that makes it so that accounts can choose who is allowed to respond to a given tweet, even preventing anyone from responding at all. The new Twitter convo tool lets accounts select who can @mention reply to your tweets. The options include either: Everyone, People you follow, or Only people you mention. The latter option makes it so that if a social media account doesn’t mention anyone, nobody can respond. This is still a tool Twitter is testing, and the company has only rolled it out to a certain percentage of users globally,

Tenet: New Trailer Premieres Tonight on Fortnite

For anyone excited for Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated new movie, Tenet, you will be able to watch the brand new trailer on Fortnite starting tonight. In the latest collaboration with Epic Games’ popular battle royale shooter, Warner Bros. is premiering the brand new Tenet trailer on Fortnite’s virtual big screens. The new Tenet trailer will premiere at the top of every hour starting at 5 pm PT/8 pm ET tonight , May 21. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/19/tenet-official-trailer"] The first trailer for Tenet was released in December, but while the first trailer showed off a mysterious time-reversal power of some sort, it’s hard to fully grasp the true plot of the film. The official synopsis simply states that an agent must prevent World War III. This isn’t the first time Fortnite premiered new footage for an upcoming movie. Star Wars premiered exclusive trailers and events in Fortnite before. Even the nascent streaming service Quibi premiered shows dir

10 Konami Games That Need Remakes

Image
Hardly a week goes by here where we don’t hear a rumor about some Konami IP being resurrected for the modern era, only to find that it’s just another anniversary collection, half-assed mobile port or, worse yet, casino game. Meanwhile, the Castlevania anime series is a huge hit on Netflix, a testament to the strength of their IP. We’re also experiencing a renaissance of excellent remakes from the Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, and even the Call of Duty franchises - and we think it's about time Konami followed suit! There are the top ten Konami franchises that deserve remakes (or, at least, a  really good remastering). Ghost of Tsushima Director Discusses Challenging Combat

Ghost of Tsushima's recent State of Play showcase offered a brief look at how combat will work in the upcoming open-world PS4 adventure from Sucker Punch, but some new details have revealed just how challenging the combat is meant to be. Speaking with IGN Nordic , Ghost of Tsushima Game Director Nate Fox explained how Jin, though a trained and skilled samurai, can be felled by a few hits — players won't just be able to go swords blazing into an encampment and take out a dozen foes. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/18-minutes-of-ghosts-of-tsushima-gameplay-full-4k-60fps-presentation"] "We are trying to make a grounded game in that sense, so a couple blows from the enemy will kill you," Fox said. "The game is very challenging. We have three words to describe the combat: Mud, blood and steel. We absolutely honor the lethality of the sword. We watched samurai movies and people go down with one or two strikes, and that is embedded inside of the com

Gran Turismo 7 Not Officially Confirmed, Company Shared Fake GT 7 Logo

Image
Next Level Racing, a company specializing in making racing simulator cockpits, posted a photo on its official Instagram account yesterday asking fans which racing game they’re most looking forward to in 2020. Next Level Racing used logos for upcoming games like Automobalista 2, F1 2020 , Dirt 5 , and a logo that looked like Gran Turismo 7. Only there’s no Gran Turismo 7 announced. After publishing the photo and kicking off speculation that a new Gran Turismo game was coming in 2020, Next Level Racing deleted the image and issued a statement claiming they do not know of any new Gran Turismo game, and that the company used a mock-up logo found online. Next Level Racing also blamed the media for creating unnecessary speculation about a new game. Red Dead Redemption 10 Years On: How Rockstar Won the West

Image
Rockstar’s acquisition of San Diego’s Angel Studios in 2002 did more than simply bring the crew behind Midnight Club and Smuggler’s Run in-house; it brought with it a variety of projects gestating within its walls. “The one that always caught our eye was this cowboy game that looked very good,” Rockstar co-founder and former creative VP Dan Houser told IGN back in 2010 . “For the time, it looked visually spectacular, but also speaking to the management guys there it was a complete mess. It didn’t really exist as a game.” Beginning life as a Capcom venture, the original Red Dead Revolver was born in the wake of Angel’s work on the N64 version of Resident Evil 2. While the latter would eventually go down to be regarded as one of the most technically-impressive ports of all-time, something about Capcom and Angel’s collaboration on their subsequent cowboy project never managed to click. This so-called spiritual successor to Gun.Smoke simply wasn’t coming together – until Rockstar entered
