Dustborn is a Story-Driven Road Trip that Turns Your Gameplay Choices into a Customised Comic Book

Dustborn appears to be many things. It’s a road tripping adventure across an alternate United States that involves maintaining relationships between the members of a rebel gang posing as a rock group, and staying off the radar of an oppressive police force called Justice. It’s a rhythm action game, requiring you to tap buttons in time with on screen prompts to sing along with the car radio or complete performances with your band. In some instances, it’s a Streets of Rage-inspired beat ‘em up that lets you take a baseball bat to hordes of robot soldiers. Yet all the while, Dustborn is also a comic book that your decisions are helping to shape on the fly. In a novel twist, or perhaps a graphic novel twist, the completion of each chapter over the course of Dustborn’s roughly 15-hour adventure generates pages of a comic book that can be browsed on the tour bus that serves as Dustborn’s mobile HQ transporting you from one story section to the next. Each comic book panel reflects the de...

Dragon’s Dogma 2: The First Hands-On Preview

When it was released eleven years ago, Dragon’s Dogma stood out as a bold open-world action-RPG that didn’t conform to any pre-existing mold for the genre. From its one-of-a-kind Pawn mechanic that encouraged you to frequently swap out AI controlled companions from a network populated by creations from other players to its action centric combat that had you climbing all over giant monsters in order to specifically target weak points and bring them down to size, there’s nothing quite like it. Even to this day. My big takeaway after playing an hour of Dragon’s Dogma 2 is that Capcom is doubling down on everything that made Dragon’s Dogma so unique, with a big focus on refining and polishing those elements to a shine. And in that regard, they’re succeeding. Pawns do everything that they did in the first game, but their contributions to both combat and navigation are more immediately noticeable. Melee combat feels more impactful and weighty, and exploration through its now seamless ope...

Lysfanga: The Time Shift Warrior Allows You to Become an Awesome Army of One

At first glance Lysfanga: The Time Shift Warrior appears to be a stylish but somewhat straightforward isometric hack ‘n’ slash in the vein of Hades, but after having some hands-on time with it at Tokyo Game Show it’s clear that there’s considerably more to it. While rewinding time has become a common function in everything from platformers to racing sims over the years, Lysfanga implements its time manipulation in a surprisingly interesting way - allowing you to basically record yourself completing a series of attacks, rewind, and then fight alongside a time-shifted duplicate of yourself who serves as a sort of deadly instant replay of your previous run. Thus each and every enemy encounter in Lysfanga quickly blossoms into an all-out attack of the clones. As you enter each arena the action is paused for a moment, allowing you to pan the camera around the environment and plot your most efficient path of attack, a bit like at the beginning of each scrap in Mario + Rabbids. Since you’...

Sand Land's Wasteland Needs Work – TGS 2023

Announced earlier this year, Bandai Namco's Sand Land looks to translate a cult Japanese comic into an open-world adventure. Playing it on the floor of Tokyo Game Show, I came away intrigued about the characters and story, but less thrilled about actually playing the full game. Sand Land debuted in the year 2000 as a short-lived tale of a demon prince exploring a desolate wilderness – hence the title. Created by Akira Toriyama, a manga artist of major renown for his Dragonball series as well as his contributions to many games such as Dragon Quest, Sand Land remained a print-only phenomenon until 2023. A feature-length film debuted this summer, with this game serving as the next multimedia tie-in. The demo opens on a strong note, with graphics that lean into its manga origins. All the characters look like they've wandered onto the screen straight from the page, with thick line art giving everyone sharp features. The characters all have personality, especially the protagonis...

Metal Gear Solid Will Be Locked to 30 FPS in Master Collection

Konami has unveiled new information about the expected resolution and framerates of the three games in its upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1. But fans aren't happy with what they're seeing, particularly regarding Metal Gear Solid being locked to 30fps across all consoles. The table above was shared on an official Konami website for the collection earlier today, and most notably has Metal Gear Solid locked to 30fps across all platforms. Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, on the other hand, both run at 60fps on everything but Nintendo Switch. What's more, all the games are stuck at 1080p resolution on everything (except the Switch's handheld mode, which doesn't support it) and never make it to 4K. As fans are pointing out, these limitations feel incredibly frustrating given the age of the games, as well as the fact that HD versions of MGS2 and MGS3 were released years ago for PS3 and Xbox 360 and ran at 60fps just fine. What's more, Konami previous...

Baldur's Gate 3 Player Finds a Secret, Meta Kachlan Interaction and It's Kind of Unsettling

As players continue to dig up all of Baldur's Gate 3's secrets, someone has found a hidden Karlach interaction where she looks at and talks to the player directly. It's pretty cool – and only a little bit unsettling. As found by YouTuber Chubblot (h/t GameRant ), the interaction involves fan-favorite Karlach, who's become so popular that Larian Studios included an ending with "better closure" for her romance in Patch 2. In the recently discovered clip, everyone’s favourite Tiefling Barbarian asks the player a series of questions before having what appears to be a bit of an existential crisis as she realizes she's locked in a video game, only to repeat the same hundred or so hours over and over again. Just Karlach randomly becoming aware of her status as a video game character nbd. pic.twitter.com/9Vzq2n8AfW — Chubblot (@chubblot) September 16, 2023 At first, things start off pretty tame, with Karlach asking the player character if she can try a m...

Forza Motorsport Is Now Available for Pre-Load With a Huge File Size

We are two weeks away from Forza Motorsport, and pre-loading began earlier this week for most versions. Fair warning: you'll want to make some room on your PC or Xbox, as Turn 10 Studios' next entry in the racing sim series has quite a hefty file size. Noted in a recent blog post , Turn 10 Studios detailed that Forza Motorsport is now available to pre-load and revealed the list of in-game Achievements. But the most interesting part is the big file sizes that come if you want to install Forza Motorsport. File sizes vary depending on which console or PC version you are installing. For example, the smallest file size is found on the Series S version, where you have to sacrifice 100GB of free space to install Forza Motorsport. The Steam version's installed file size is 118GB, but as Turn 10 points out in its own post, the download size is 108GB. The Microsoft Store version is 1GB more at 119GB, and the biggest file size out of all four versions belongs to the Xbox Series X ...

How Forza Motorsport Evolved Into a 'Racing Platform for the Future'

2019 was some year. Baby Yoda. The end of Avengers and Game of Thrones. Two separate Fyre Festival documentaries. The first documented case of COVID-19. Suffice to say, there was… plenty going on. In fact, just about all we didn’t get in 2019 was a new instalment of the Forza Motorsport series. We were due for it, so to speak. Since the arrival of the original in 2005, a new Forza Motorsport had dependably arrived every two years – across three generations of Xbox console hardware – for over a decade. But there would be no Forza Motorsport in 2019 , despite the fact it had been two years since the launch of 2017’s Forza Motorsport 7. There’d be no Forza Motorsport in 2020, 2021, or 2022 either. Building the next evolution of the Forza Motorsport series was going to take time, because the next evolution of the Forza Motorsport series had to be more than just a product. It was going to be a platform. “We supported Forza Motorsport 7 more than we had any of the previous Motorsport...

Where Winds Meet's Combat, Character Customisation and Exploration Detailed

While it's sadly not playable at Tokyo Game Show 2023, Everstone Studios' ambitious open-world action RPG was highlighted today in a special IGN Japan livestream, and we've got the full 18 minutes of gameplay footage here for you to check out in stunning 4K. The action starts with a fiery assault on horseback through fields of flowers highly reminiscent of Ghost of Tsushima's gorgeous vistas, before crashing straight into a boss fight. When he went hands on with it back at Gamescom 2023 in August, Matt Purslow suggested that the boss encounter in Where Winds Meet wasn't exactly Dark Souls-level in difficulty , but its fast-paced slashing and parrying would suggest that it isn't exactly for babies either (despite the fact the main character has an infant strapped to his chest for some reason). With the hulking boss down for the count, we then get a look at Where Winds Meet's staggeringly detailed character customisation. A simple set of base presets soon...

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: The Teal Mask DLC Review

It’s been almost a year since I reviewed Pokemon Scarlet and Violet at launch, and I still feel more conflicted about them than any other Pokemon game in all my years loving the series. They dazzled me with their open world design, which felt like the answer to years of fan requests – but the performance and aesthetic hits that came with that innovation were painful catches that didn’t quite feel worth the trade. Still, with two DLCs on the horizon, I had hope that Game Freak would be able to pull it together. Could the first DLC, The Teal Mask, fix Scarlet and Violet’s glaring issues and deliver a robust, new experience that fully embraced the clear potential of what these games could have been? Nope!!! For starters, I don’t know how it’s possible, but somehow The Teal Mask runs worse than the base game of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet does. I complained about the poor performance of Scarlet and Violet in my initial review, and had hoped that a whole year later Game Freak would have ...

Notorious Film Nerd Hideo Kojima Reveals His Criterion Collection Picks

Hideo Kojima isn't shy about his love for movies. The creator behind games like Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding even wanted to make movies before becoming a game developer, and his games often pay homage to some of his favorites. Even Snake, the main character of the Metal Gear Franchise, is named after Escape from New York's protagonist, Snake Plissken. He famously goes out of his way to inject cinematic sensibilities into his works and loves working with big-name actors. The man just loves movies. Criterion, the organization behind the Criterion Collection, invited Hideo Kojima to do a video in its 'Closet Picks' series on its YouTube channel. The series is dedicated to highlighting notable voices in creative industries where a selected luminary picks their favorites from the "Criterion Closet," which is exactly what it sounds like; a closet containing physical copies of each film in the Criterion Collection. In the video, Kojima looks like a kid...

Cyberpunk 2077's Big 2.0 Update Is Coming Tomorrow - Here's What Time

Last week, CD Projekt Red shared that the game's big 2.0 update – the long-awaited overhaul that promises to rework many of the game's systems – will launch tomorrow, August 21. While the announcement video confirmed a date, it left out what time the patch would go live, leaving fans to speculate what time they'd be able to jump into the newly overhauled Night City. Earlier today, CDPR took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to announce a new stream in its RedStreams series, which the Warsaw, Poland-based studio often uses to reveal new updates and information on Cyberpunk 2077. The stream's scheduled for 4:00 PM CEST (or 7:00 AM PST or 5 PM BST). Another episode of the #REDstreams will be live in less than 24 hours! We're ready! Are you? Starfield Hits 10 Million Players in Less Than Three Weeks

Starfield has seen more than 10 million players since it came out on September 1 in paid early access form, Bethesda has announced . The impressive milestone means Starfield remains the biggest launch in Bethesda history after shooting past six million players on September 7. The sci-fi role-playing game launched on PC and Xbox Series X and S, and day-and-date on Game Pass as perhaps Microsoft’s highest-profile first-party release since 343’s Halo Infinite came out in December 2021. Neither Microsoft nor Bethesda are yet to announce sales. We do know Starfield hit a peak of 330,723 concurrent players on Steam 10 days ago. Data from SteamDB shows Starfield sitting in 27th place in Steam's all-time list, while Bethesda’s Skyrim is in 31st. Skyrim's record peaked 12 years ago at 287,411, but Starfield fell short of Fallout 4, which sits in 16th place overall with 472,962. Like-for-like comparisons with Bethesda’s previous games are difficult given the Game Pass effect. Acco...

Destiny 2 Developer Bungie Takes Unusual Step of Confirming DDoS Attacks Amid Crafting Glitch Issue

Destiny 2 developer Bungie is battling to fix a massive crafting glitch that let players make god-tier weapons — and now it’s facing down distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. Bungie took the unusual step of confirming the DDoS attacks in a tweet in part to explain to the Destiny community that a recent spike in error codes and disconnects some thought were the result of the studio’s efforts to fix the crafting glitch problem. “Over the past couple of days, we've seen a spike in error codes and disconnects,” Bungie said. “The team has confirmed that these error codes are not related to the planned fixes rolling out for the recent crafting issue and are instead a result of DDoS attacks. While we typically don't confirm these types of attacks and do not plan to in the future for general game security reasons, we believe it's the right thing to do for our players to communicate the added pressure to our systems given recent circumstances. “We want to thank our pl...

What the Creator of The Settlers Did Next After Leaving Ubisoft's Disastrous Reboot

Some describe Volker Wertich as the German Sid Meier, or, if they’re feeling particularly bold, the German Hideo Kojima. He is the creator of The Settlers, a 30-year-old city builder video game many fondly remember playing on the Amiga back in 1993. And so when Ubisoft announced a reboot of The Settlers with Wertich signed on to lead development using the same graphics engine that powered the likes of The Division, fans could barely contain their excitement. Finally, The Settlers would return with a game worthy of its forebears. In 2020, just two years after The Settlers was announced at gamescom 2018 to so much enthusiasm, Wertich quietly left the project. And after a string of delays and development issues, The Settlers reboot launched in February 2023, although you’d be forgiven for missing the memo. The Settlers: New Allies , as Ubisoft called it, was panned by those who had hoped for a return to the series’ roots. What they got instead was something no veteran The Settlers fan...
