Weird West Review
In this alternate universe, the West was won by trying a bunch of ideas so crazy they just might work… and if they don’t, hitting the quick-load button to revert to an earlier save and trying something even crazier until you pull it off. Thanks to that freedom to experiment with its world as you explore, Weird West is one of those games that feels like a stealth and combat playground even as it tells five mostly serious, well-written stories with interesting decisions throughout and a thoughtful conclusion. And with so much ground to cover and replayability to investigate, it’s well worth putting up with some quirks and underwhelming loot. What ties Weird West’s plot together is a group of shadowy figures using a magical brand to force your character’s consciousness into the bodies of various unsuspecting people. It’s a clever play on the way so many games have us take control of a character who already exists in that world but still need to bring us up to speed on their identity: h...
Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader – How Did it Take This Long to Get a Warhammer CRPG?
It’s truly bizarre that across the nearly 30 years of Warhammer video games, we haven’t had a single one that attempted to channel the tabletop Warhammer experience by utilizing the genre that feels best suited to do so: CRPGs. But that’s all about to change, as Pathfinder developer Owlcats has been cooking up something to fill this void. During an extensive hands-off demo of Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, I checked out its extremely chunky turn-based combat system, drowned in its plethora of dialogue options and social skill checks, and nodded approvingly at its lovingly faithful depiction of Warhammer’s morbid universe. While it’s still very early, so far this CRPG is shaping up to be everything I’ve wanted from a Warhammer video game. If you’ve ever played (or even glanced at) a game of Warhammer 40K, then you probably know it’s designed for a hyper-specific kind of nerd who loves calculations, large-scale drama, and an incredibly detailed world one could easily get lost in. [poilib element="accentDivider"] The Little Nightmares franchise has everything it takes to make a great video game: originality, distinctive art and mood, tight production values, and solid gameplay. The mischief makers at Sweden’s Tarsier Studios have crept it up a notch in Little Nightmares II. Little Nightmares II carries the torch of tradition established in the much beloved and critically-acclaimed Little Nightmares into the further corners and crevasses of your childhood fears with bigger outdoor environments, gorgeous graphics, and even more interactivity than the original. With an incredible artistic style that conjures Tim Burton-esque vibes to shadowy scenes and settings that would make Edgar Allen Poe’s heart race, the brooding lighting and creepy sound effects of this genre-defying, deliberately suspenseful adventure puzzle game make Little Nightmares II a macabre masterpiece. While upping the fear factor on all the things that made Little Nightmares so refreshingly frightening in 2017, Little Nightmares II adds some huge new features, including: [poilib element="articleSubHeader" parameters="label=Teamwork%20is%2Fas%20Your%20Friend"] Teamwork is the name of the game as the boy protagonist named Mono is joined by Six, the brave girl clad in her signature yellow raincoat, who returns as an AI companion in Little Nightmares II. You can call her to your side by whispering, and lead her by the hand to a specific spot. They must cooperate to escape a dingy and claustrophobic world that’s repulsive to the core. Mono and Six must often pull levers, hoist each other up, and hop upon or push boxes together, and because there are many more items to pick-up and interact with in Little Nightmares II, that means you have to determine if these things can even help you on your quest. [poilib element="articleSubHeader" parameters="label=Your%20Nightmares%20Had%20Offspring!"] A host of all-new residents inhabit a world of a much larger scale than you and your AI mate, and stand by to haunt your steps and disturb your sleep. But you cannot rest, until you overcome.

- Outwit the sadistic teacher in the decrepit school, who has no intentions of giving you a gold star on your test. Can you use stealth and smarts to tip-toe past her and battle past the zombified students?
- Survive the bloodthirsty hunter, who ambles after you and blasts away with his pump shotgun as you scramble from one flimsy cover to the next, like in those dreams when you feel like you’re running in quicksand and can’t seem to escape danger fast enough.
- Find a way to flee from the horrible hospital, dodging dangling limbs and animated torsos, because in this game, sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. But when those animated appendages start chasing you down, don’t hesitate to grab a pipe and smash some fingers.
- Unlock the mystery behind the Thin Man. Who is he? What is he up to? Might he be the one responsible for the treacherous transmissions?
