Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer - First Impressions

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer seems to be bringing back the core makeup of Call of Duty games. Modern Warfare 2 is bringing back the best parts of the 2019 remake and adding more to that. Here are my impressions on Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer from my preview time at Infinity Ward (you can also read my first impressions of the single-player campaign).

Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer seems just as good as the remake from 2019. This brings back all the core basics that were great about 2019’s and makes them better from that iteration. Gunsmith has been slightly reworked to be more grounded in modern military elements so now players can unlock “Platforms” that progress a gun’s evolution. So for example, the M4 Platform could lead to unlocking the M16 or the .45 SOCOM. So really, the platforms are a “family” of guns that span the different categories, like the Assault Rifles, SMGs, LMGs, and so on.

Like in Modern Warfare 2’s campaign, multiplayer will feature the new and updated water physics and tech in the new maps. There are hybrid vehicles that will operate on land and water and you can swim around in the water through the maps. You can use pistols and knives while underwater, but if you fire a pistol, the projectile speed on the bullets will be slower so there’ll be less impact meaning it’ll take more bullets to kill someone when shooting from underwater.

Also along with previous equipment in your loadouts, there’s new equipment that will adjust to the new water mechanics as well. For example, when deployed in the water, the proximity mine will inflate a little flotation device for itself to float to the surface and operate that way. Similarly, there’s a new piece of equipment called the Inflatable Decoy that basically operates as a decoy dummy from Metal Gear Solid V where it pops up and distracts the enemy. When this Inflatable Decoy is thrown in the water, it will assume a swimming stance with its weapon out to adjust to its water environment.

Now players can unlock “Platforms” that progress a gun’s evolution.

Additional new equipment include a Tactical Camera that you can throw on a wall or ceiling and it’ll alert you to enemies walking by and you can even go into the camera to operate it and look for enemies. A new Drill Charge operates kind of like Apex Legends’ Maggie’s ability or Rainbow Six Siege’s Fuse’s ability where you throw a drill on the outside of a wall and it will drill through and throw a grenade into that room and this can also be used on vehicles. There’s also a new DDOS equipment that will let you know where there are nearby vehicles and equipment and will release an EMP charge to stall the devices.

There are the basic core game modes to test these new pieces of equipment out in but also two new game modes being added for Modern Warfare 2: Knockout and Prisoner Rescue. Knockout is basically gunfight and core multiplayer combined where it’s a round based mode. You are able to revive your teammates but if your team is eliminated, the round ends in your loss. The objective is to either kill the enemy team or go to a spawn location where a bag will drop and you hold it until a timer runs out and if you survive, you win. Prisoner Rescue is basically Call of Duty meets Rainbow Six Siege where it’s a breach and clear objective to either rescue prisoners or defend them from being taken on the opposite side. You can revive your teammates in this mode as well but again, if your team is entirely taken out, you lose that round.

There are bigger lobby gamemodes which will feature up to 64 players but also have the core gamemodes with 6v6 lobbies. The new maps look clean and great and because the campaign revolves around the globe, the environments and locations are varied and unique. The ping system is being carried over and tweaked to have more options in call outs and communication. The slide mechanic is also being carried over but with an additional movement mechanic, diving, where you can double tap slide/crouch and literally dive to the ground in a sort of last resort move to get cover.

Modern Warfare 2 is set to release October 28th and a beta will be launching before its release date if you pre-order. Of course, Warzone will reflect the changes multiplayer shows some time after launch but no date was set in stone yet. But what was confirmed was that Warzone is coming to mobile, and more details would be announced later. Multiplayer looks great and I’m very excited to get some time in the beta when it comes out because Modern Warfare in 2019 was a fantastic spin on the original iteration.
