Nearly 20 years after its original release, Konami is officially remaking Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater for the PlayStation 5.
Announced during today’s PlayStation Showcase, the new Metal Gear Solid 3 remake is titled Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater and looks to be a faithful remake of Hideo Kojima’s original game. (Δ is pronounced “Delta”.) It was revealed in a brief CGI teaser trailer in which the camera pans through a familiar jungle landscape and eventually comes to a rest on Snake amid Cynthia Harrell’s rendition of the classic theme song.
Additional info released after the event confirmed that the remake will feature the original voices, presumably including David Hayter as Snake. Konami also promised “unprecedented graphics and immersive sound.”
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 revealed alongside remake
In addition to Metal Gear Solid Δ, Konami also announced the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1. The collection will include Metal Gear Solid as well as the first three games. It is set to release in Fall 2023, and platforms are to be confirmed.
Metal Gear Solid Δ and Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection will mark the extended series’ return to modern consoles after a lengthy absence. The original Snake Eater was released in North America in 2004 and subsequently remastered, but Kojima’s well-publicized break with Konami led to a lengthy hiatus for the series proper. Its last major release was Metal Gear Solid Survive, which launched to middling reviews in 2018.
The original Snake Eater follows an agent codenamed Naked Snake as he searches for his mentor, who has seemingly defected to the Soviet Union in the midst of the Cold War. It won praise for its story, mechanics, and unique boss battles, many of which remain famous to this day. The remake has been rumored to be in the works for sometime now, with Bluepoint and Virtuous among the studios speculated to be leading development, but this is the first that it has officially been shown.
Kojima has long since moved on to his own projects, bringing with him famed illustrator Yoji Shinkawa, whose art was instrumental in bringing Metal Gear Solid to life. It’s unclear how much of the original development team is involved with the remake, but the group did release an unsigned statement through the press release.
We thank you and sincerely appreciate your continuous support. Currently, the development team are working together to create an environment where fans can experience and enjoy the Metal Gear series on the latest platforms.
