Xbox Put Its Streaming-Only Console On Hold Due to High Costs

Microsoft's streaming-only Xbox console, codenamed Project Keystone, was put on hold because it was too expensive to produce. Speaking to The Verge (and spotted by VGC ), Xbox boss Phil Spencer said Microsoft couldn't create a streaming-only console it could sell for a cheap enough price. Spencer hoped to sell Project Keystone for around $99 to $129, and even though Microsoft takes a hit on every console it sells , the streaming-only machine simply cost too much. "The console we built that people have seen , Keystone, was more expensive than we wanted it to be when we actually built it out with the hardware that we had inside," Spencer said. "We decided to focus that team’s efforts on delivering the smart TV streaming app ." Especially as Xbox already offers a cheaper next generation console in the Series S, which retails for $299 compared to the Series X's $499, Spencer said Microsoft would need to sell Project Keystone for significantly cheape...

Phil Spencer Confident In Decision to Delay Starfield

Starfield's original release date has come and gone but, despite fan disappointment, Xbox boss Phil Spencer is confident that delaying Bethesda's latest was the right move. Speaking to The Verge (and spotted by PC Gamer ), Spencer said that releasing a game too early is a mistake the company has made before and, especially as Starfield is the first Bethesda game to be released as an Xbox exclusive, he wanted the developers to feel supported by their new publisher. "We have experience shipping games too early," Spencer said. "But in hindsight, when you look at a game like Starfield - which has taken so long and so much investment in new IP from the team - the decision to give the team the time to build the game that they feel they should be building is just the right thing to do." He continued: "Starfield and Redfall, which are our first big Xbox games with [Bethesda owner] ZeniMax coming into the team, I just wanted to make sure those teams felt...

Fable Co-Creator Says He 'Ripped Off' Devil May Cry to Create the Xbox RPG's World

The original Fable could have been entirely different before co-creator Dene Carter turned to an unlikely source of inspiration – Devil May Cry . “When you're feeling lost: steal it,” he said via Twitter . “100% rip it off from another game.” Of course, Fable doesn’t do that – at least, not in the way you’re thinking. The themes, ideas, and story of the 2004 RPG are entirely different from Devil May Cry… but the game’s creator revealed that it almost spiraled out of control until he turned to DMC for an idea about the game’s scope. I'm sure everyone knows this hack already, but I'm going to talk about it anyway, on the off-chance that it saves someone from going completely off-the-rails during their dev. It's a hint about scope, when you're feeling lost: steal it. 100% rip it off from another game. — Dene Carter (@Fluttermind) November 14, 2022 “How did the world of Fable become that size? Because I'd played [Devil May Cry] and noticed that the world...

Every Game Delay Announced in 2022 (So Far)

Video game delays have become commonplace during the pandemic, as studios largely continue to work within the confines of remote or hybrid development. This unprecedented shift in the way games are made has impacted the last two years of development dramatically, and as such, we're once again seeing a significant number of games delayed. As we've reached October, the number of games delayed this year has already passed the total number of delays in 2021. To keep track of these ever-shifting release dates and to keep you up on when to expect your most-anticipated games, we've created a running list of every such announcement: full games, notable DLC, and every piece of gaming hardware officially delayed this year. We're primarily focusing on unreleased games for this list, but if you'd like to see games that were delayed earlier this year and have since been released, you can find those at the bottom. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty Will Be a Paid Expansion, CD Projekt Red Confirms

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that its major Cyberpunk 2077 expansion, Phantom Liberty, will be paid DLC when it's released in 2023. Speaking to Games Radar , CD Projekt Red's global PR director Radek Grabowski said that, while he couldn't yet confirm a price, the expansion wouldn't be more free DLC akin to the recent Edgerunners update . Though players familiar with CD Projekt Red may have expected as much, this is the first time the developer has explicitly confirmed that Phantom Liberty will cost money. Some confusion is warranted, of course, since CD Projekt Red does typically release a lot of free content for its games ( including the next-gen update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt coming this December ). Phantom Liberty is a much heftier addition with new story content and missions, however, as opposed to just containing new cosmetics, weapons, and so on. Only a short teaser trailer has been released so far, confirming that Keanu Reeves will return as Johnny S...

Destiny 2 Anti-Cheating Legal Battle Seems to Lean In Bungie's Favour

Bungie's anti-cheating legal battle appears to be leaning in the Destiny 2 developer's favour after the court ruled against cheats company AimJunkies' retaliation suit. As reported by TorrentFreak (and spotted by Eurogamer ), U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Zilly sided with Bungie after AimJunkies accused the developer of hacking the computer of one cheat developer called James May. "May has failed to sufficiently allege that Bungie accessed his personal computer and files without authorization," Judge Zilly said. "To support his allegation that Bungie accessed his personal computer, May relies on a document that Bungie purportedly produced during discovery in this matter." He continued: "May, however, does not explain what this document is or how it evidences instances in which Bungie allegedly accessed his computer without authorization and downloaded his personal information." Though the case is ongoing and could still fall in eith...
